Thinking of switching brands.
Whats the reviews or opinions with these front shocks other than being light.

so are you saying that the air is for damping........thought air was for preload and ride height.
isn't their oil chamber for damping.

2808 miles on mine so far. Did have to get them serviced last fall when they refused to take air from the pump. Dealer cleaned and regreased them and they were as good as new.
Low air settings (50-60psi) give the best handling while higher psi are needed for big jumps. That's really the only downside: you have to carry the pump around with u. But it really takes a good hit to bottom them at 50-60psi.
U need a fox authorized service center to do the rebuilds but these are no more frequent than any other shocks.
In two winters, I've had no problems with losing air and the shock bodies still look new. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a model with air shocks again; in fact, I'd look for them.

Anyone have any words of wisdom as to why the sno cross sleds dont use the floats. We went to the WSA event in Syracuse, only a very few of the race sleds had floats, most had conventional springs. Not bashing floats, just curioous as to why they dont use them.

I was talking to Ross at HyGear a month or so back and I was talking to him about Floats. He said he didn't care for them. I said really?..That the Apex RTX's I rode with them definately felt different than any other front shocks I've ever rode. He said "Different" is a good way of putting it, Not Better.
From My very limited knowledge, I assume when you increase Spring pressure (or in this case air) you are naturally going to speed up rebound and a shock with rebound adjustment can slow it down. I kind of wish Yamaha would have put the GYT's on the Nytro RTX. Then We would have compression and Rebound on all 4 shocks. Why does Malinosky have Ohlins on his? Maybe for us weekend warriors the std. floats are good enough? Floats should be great for anti-bottoming. I want to see if Yamaha puts a ohlins front shock in the accessory catalog for the FX Nytro.

many of the snoX riders here in Sweden use Öhlins Shocks. Riders from all brands know how great they are... For an example BRP Lynx fatrory team use Öhlins...

My dealer doesn't like the floats either. He thinks the best shocks are the GYTR shocks that come on the std Nytro. They are very easy to adjust and can be calibrated in a wider range of firmness.

I have floats on my mountain sled for 2 seasons now and love them, they will not bottom out on the big hits and I can beat on them trailing in through the big bumps without bottoming . However on snow-cross and under steady hard application they will get hot and the air-pressure will increase while the dampening decreases( oil gets hot) for anyone who is not racing at a high level that is a none issue.
I would not have a mountain sled without them.

Over 4000 miles on the Fox Floats, I will have them serviced this summer.
These shocks have made a multitude of set ups available in the time it takes to use the pump. I will definetly be looking for them on my '09.

Ross is a great guy! Man, does he know suspension!! CRAZY! Anyway, I'm with you about the GYT's on the RTX! I would consider trading the Floats to someone for the GYT's before I ride it!!
A side note here..I ride MX on quads and I had a full fox set up last year using the EVOLS.. I did not like them at all and am no longer running them. Never the right combo of plush and stiff, my coil springed shocks work and feel much better in my opinion. Frank R.
