Sunday at Lebanon Valley Dragway:

As some of you know, I traded my old Suzuki Pro Mod engine for a 2001 GSXR1000. The 1000 is very clean and we dynoed it when we got back to the shop. It dynoed well at and around 144 to 146 RWHP. It has no Power Commander, the engine is stock and has a Yoshimura RS3 pipe on it and bolt-on swingarm extensions. I have been lecturing Freddie Jr. about how to drive a no bar bike. Although I have only been down the race one time on a motorycle without a slick and wheelie bar, I can at least offer some advice from being involved in drag racing for so long. Back in 1981 or 1982 when I received my NHRA Pro Stock motorycle license, you couldn't go faster than 120 MPH without an NHRA license. I told Freddie, who was visibly nervous to leave the starting line like he was out for a liesurely Sunday ride. I also told him to short shift each gear at about 8000 RPM's and shut down at approximately 1000 feet. He did exactly as instructed actually shutting off at around 900 feet. He coasted across the finish line at 12.68/87.07 MPH. He was very smooth. He was reminiscent of Mike Slowe smooth! I was quite please with his ability to keep it all together being his first ever run down a dragstrip. When we got back to the pit area, the fellow pitted next to me asked how he did. I replied that he did well. Freddie told me after the run that the thing that made him the most nervous was the fact that he couldn't go over 120 MPH without an NHRA license. The racer pitted next to us told me that he can go as fast as he wants providing he has a full leather suit, approved helmet, gloves and over the ankle leather boots. I told Freddie to let it eat for his second pass. Despite the fact that he sort shifted and left the line real easy, he ran a 10.99/129.71. I was doing backfkips on the starting line! Back at the old Connecticut Dragway, it took me from 1975 to 1978 to run a 10 second run on my old very peaky Kawasaki triple H-2. HIs butterflies were now gone although he told me that he still gets nervous sitting in the staging lanes. I told him that butterflies will keep you sharp and are expected. I tried my best to soother him and told him that despite the fact that you are not racing anyone because were were only testing and tuning, that there is no one he needs to impress anyone.

On his 3rd run I told him to start shifting at 11,000 RPM's. Once again he left the starting line very easy and ran a 10.24/139.34!!! I threw my arms up on the starting line and ran to our pit bike. I literally had chills and goosebumps on my arms. I am so proud of him!

I was saving for a stock 600cc sportbike but this bike is very clean and too good of a motorcyle to pass up. I was concerned about his riding ability until his absolutely great debut. Next thing we will do is get him his physical and get him licensed.

I will live vicariously through Freddie Jr!

I will DaveyBoy. Our next session will be 1 week from this Sunday. He will get his FAA approved physical and then try to make his 6 licensing runs. It may be difficult to get 6 runs in 1 day at Lebanon Valley Dragway. Might have to take a Saturday off at the shop to get his license passes done.

Congrats on jr's progress on the drag strip. You must be very proud of him.

Congratulations to both of you!

Question: So is that now the proudest moment you had with your boy?

I can sort of relate. My 5yr. old daughter took to riding her bike without training wheels, by herself - no "push me daddy" stuff, although we had tried but she wouldn't peddle. Last night she peddled down the driveway. Goosebumps - AWESOME!

Kids are great!
