front shocks? how to check if shot

How can you tell if a stock 05 warrior shock is bad, I lift on the front of my sled & it comes up say 3"? A arm are parallel to ground. when riding turning right seems mushy-cannot get pressure on ski, left seems to be much stiffer. I have removed shocks pushed on them very still, do I need to remove spring to check? Have two other pair of shock w spring on all seem about the same?

Yes, you need to pull the spring, then cycle the shock slowly. If it's smooth all the way in, with no gurgling noises (that air circulating through it might make), you're OK from a functional standpoint. The oil inside it could look like tar, but the shock isn't "blown".
