on my 2007 attak gt ( I bought used this year), I am trying to set my front shock springs to a good starting point for lenght(preload). The book gives a spec to measure between the center of the eyebolt on top, to the top of the collar nut abouve the spring. The spec is 4.69 inch to 5.08 inch. now I have all black shocks(I assume the yamaha shocks and not olins). There are 3 collar nuts on top, a thin one above the spring with a thick one locked on top of that. Then a thick collar nut that apears to do nothing, turned all the way to the top of the shock body. Now, if I turn the nuts to the spec range, there is very little thread left on the shock body....maybe an inch or so. So it seems like about 80 percent of the shock body thread is wasted. Does this seem correct?? I am about 200 lbs(no gear). What is everyone else doing as a good starting point for the front shock/spring preload adjust??

set the adjusting nut just tight enough so that the spring doesn't rattle, this will lower the front end for better cornering. Front end will not bottom except on hard hits.

I agree, darn good place to start. Too much preload won't let the sway bar do it's job, leading to early inside ski lift.

Thanks guys. I will try that. No rattle wil be somewhere around 4-4.25 inch. Thanks for the replies.

Yep this is what I do. Lift the front off the ground and loosen the spring till it is has no pressure on it. Then just pick an easy spot to measure and then tighter it 10mm.
