When I disconnected the fuel line from the fuel tank on my `14 Viper, I broke the black plastic retainer ring that does not allow the coupler on the end of the line to come off the tank nipple. I am pretty sure the retainer simply seated against the back side of the knerled end of the tank nipple. I was able to thread a zip tie into the coupler where the black plastic retainer ring used to be (see pic attached). Can I slide the fuel line coupler on the tank nipple so the zip tie is past the knerled end of the nipple and then tighten the zip tie to keep the coupler on the nipple under full line pressure like the retainer ring did?

Do you have an auto parts store close by?most should stock dorman#800-023 which is a kit with 5/16"&3/8" horseshoe retainer clips&the kit is only like $7 So for the price I would try to get a replacement retainer. The ziptie might work but the fuel lines are usually harder to get at&fuel leaks are scary&you don't wanna take that chance with your sled, yourself garage etc.you can measure the o.d. of the nipple to find exact size but 5/16&3/8 are most common

You can buy just the ends. I have part number in shop. Think only around $6.

Zip tie is not SAFE AT ALL!!!!!
Buy the ends from Travis or if the your fuel filter needs to be replaced just buy the entire line assembly from Yamaha with filter.
Package contain’s line from fuel rail to pump.

The retainer clip alone can be replaced, the fitting itself is avail from yamaha for cheap also but is clamped with a special clamp.would require a new special clamp &special pliers to crimp.i would just replace the retainer, these are replaced every day in truck&autos&it's the same fitting/retainer,avail from auto parts stores&auto dealers.general motors, ford, dodge use them

Fully aware... I have all the speciality tools for fuel lines ect.
For most people they do not and for some one to ask a question like that when a retainer breaks tells me that they are unfamiliar with fuel line quick disconnects. So for safety and being a 2014 model, the fuel filter line assembly should be changed as a maintenance item.

Thanks for all the info. I will start with auto parts store to see if I can find the retainer clip. If not, a whole new line it is because I dont have the crimping tool. How do you remove the orange retainer clip on the rail end without breaking it?

Don’t remove it, just push down on the orange retainer and pull line off of rail.

I took a good look at the fuel line coupler with the zip tie in it. There would have been no way it woukd have held the coupler on the nipple. I should have taken the time to look things over a little closer before asking such a dumb question as to whether the zip tie would work or not.

There is no such thing as a DUMB question.
If you don’t ask, you’ll won’t know!!!!

Found them online if anyone is interested in where you can get them. You will need the 3/8" size for the coupler that connects to the tank nipple

I tried the zip tie, and my sled turned into a fuel fountain on the trail! Major problem! I'd recommend buying the crimping pliers too,, if you're a handy guy you'll use them again. I've used mine a few times on the locking bands on CV boots. I dont remember them being too expensive. Oetiker clamp is the name for the locking band I think, good luck with it. Pretty easy fix.

I ended up buying a package of the clips from Advanced Auto for $4.73 and used the 3/8" clip. They are identical to the one that I broke so all is good now and the sled is back together awaiting summer storage.
