Has anyone done anything to protect the painted finish on the Yamaha 4-stroke sleds?

I know some companies make covers for motorcycle fuel tanks, but seeing Yamaha is the only one to actually have a nicely finished fuel tank on a sled I haven't come across anything for them-yet.

Would like to avoid too much,if any, paint damage.

In 3 years of riding I have not had any issues with this on my 03. I don't think you need to worry about it. There are tank bags available from Yamaha and others too.

I think tank bags due more damage scraping against the tank than gas spills. At least from what I've seen.

Yea they will put a small blemish in the finish.

Ditto! I have an idea to tape or sew sheep-skin, or fleece fabric on the underside of the bag. Or maybe you could use velcro on the sides of the lower cowling, below the tank to fasten it, then put the bag on top.

Stay away from Choko bags, they really do a number on the paint.

I also had issues with the Yamaha tank bag scarping because I sit so close to the tank while riding. It kind of whited out the clear coat all over. To stop any more damage I took head liner material and glued it to the back side of the bag. My paint guy gave me some stuff called Clean Cut Non Silicone compound for clear coats made by EZ.1, Inc. I didn’t give it a try because I traded the sled in. Any one ever use this stuff?

Hopefully no one will have the same problem with the seating position of the 06.

fuel tank protection

Clear 3M vinyl like the stuff you would use to protect the hood of your car from stone chips.Just cut to fit and no more scuff marks. :4STroke: :rocks:

OK just wondering why we need to protect the paint on the tank??? My 03 never had any kind of problems with paint or any other problems, whats up,did someone see something others missed!!

I have a novel idea, don't spill any gas :tg:
Seriously, with the the bars being up higher on the apex series you shouldn't have any issues being able to flip the gas nozzle up to prevent dripping. I know it was tight on my Warrior and RX-1.

I used to get blemishes from trailering with the covers on when I had an open trailer, the covers seem to scuff the hood in places but it especially affected my windshield(mostly the chrome ones). I picked up a dust cover off my dealer that Yamaha ships there atv's in and put that under the cover and no more scuff marks. If you can get your hands on them they are great even for summer storage because they breath well but still keep everything dust free.
