the original question is that I thought maybe by riding aggressively and sitting close to the tank, that with putting your knees against it may cause paint wear on the fuel tank cover-which I wouldn't care for personally.

Tank pads
Seen an ad in Snowgoer magazine of a website for Skinz Protective Gear, who makes knee pads which attach on the sides of the fuel tank (cover) of the Apex as well as many other sleds.
They attach by velcro and are washable.
This may be of interest to some.
