FX Nytro 121 in deep snow/off Trail Concerns

Some of what you are experiencing is probably due to the skis. I can get through the powder, but it does take momentum and effort. The problem I find is that the front end dives under the powder because of the narrow skis and forces you to plow through the snow rather than float on it.

Starting off is the toughest as like you said, the sled will want to trench. You need to ensure you get moving a little before giving too much gas.

Once the sled is in motion, I find it is really good in the snow. We hit a steep hill the other day climbing out of a valley and I easily blew by my friend on his Renegade. On the incline, the skis are floating, so you get the full use of the power and track.

I agree with you about the diving. I have a set of Slydog Powder hounds in the garage waiting to be installed as soon as my Bergstrom Triples get here. I am hoping this will help some.

What about the clutching are you experiencing the same thing as I am?

I suspect your over revving issue is likely related to snow ingestion. Yellowknife has stated that he believes his secondary failed because snow ingestion kept causing belt slippage. Belt slippage would definitely cause some over rev.

I haven't noticed this, but then again, I'm usually not really paying attention. I'm more of a give 'er and see what happens kind of guy. If she makes it through, then I'm happy.

Just like you said NL Viper, I find mine works great in the powder. Man, I couldn't believe what I've ridden through back in December, powder was at least 4 feet deep in some places and even deeper in others, and I might have been stuck 2 or 3 times, which is pretty darn good considering who we're talkin about here ! I'd say the only thing you're lacking is a wider pair of skis. Mine are similar to yours except they're probably an inch narrower, but the Slydog Race skis definitley improve floatation on this sled. I've also got the Yamaha skidplate on mine, and although it doesn't add a lot of surface area to this sled for floatation purposes, I'd say every little bit helps considering the increased weight of the front end on these 4 strokes. I really don't know what else to tell ya, I haven't done many suspension adjustments except for some stiffer compression settings on the rear clickers and softer rebound settings as well, but other than that, the sled is pretty much untouched. My front floats are @ 75 psi, which are nice n stiff for pounding, but everything else is stock. I haven't had any issues with overrev, that's for sure, but this sled definitely gets around as good or better than some of the others I've ridden with. You've got one piece of the puzzle solved with that track I tell ya, and those skis you got are probably the icing on the cake, so get em on ASAP. Just Giv'er and let us know how it works ;)!

Thanks for replying guys. I hear what you are saying. I am hoping to get my triples today and then the skis will be put on. NM I will send you a pm with some questions about the skis.

For deep, dry, untracked powder, the stock skis are worthless. 6" wide skis are better but they still dive. 7" wide skis are the ticket.

The biggest issues I've found with my Nytro in deep snow is the track and tunnel. The 1.25" track isn't the best for powder, but that is a given. The deep tunnel and extra wide floorboards tend to drag and get you hung up more easily than say the tapered tunnel on the Vector. These issues arn't a huge deal to me since I'm by the coast and our snowpack usually contains a lot of moisture so it supports a sled pretty well. I really like the tunnel design for aggressive riding through the bumps and on set up trails. It provides lots of leg room and really lets you stretch your legs out when your feet are futher back on the boards.

Will do Redsnake, I am going to try and do some suspension adjustments. If we ever get any snow again for testing.

acesfan05, I have the 1.5 Intense and the Powder hounds are just waiting for there carbides!! When you say set the sled up right, would you mind elaborating.

Thanks

When I say set the sled up right, I mean find the best settings (shocks and suspension) for your size and riding style. I know that's kinda vague, but that's what I meant :)

Have Fun,
Will

As was mentioned earlier they really screwed up mounting the skid deep in the tunnel. It doesn't have enough clearence and just drags on the bulkhead and boards especially bad when carving.

The chassis is terrible in deep snow, when u trench it sits stuck up on the boards and the thing is so effin heavy its hard to get unstuck.

This sled is well suited for riding groomed trails and hardpack

-not capable in powder

-horrible for jumping anything serious

If you can't tell i'm very dissapointed in this sled off trail.

I had minimal problems with my standard short-track FX Nytro in 2-3 feet of fresh powder when it had the stock track on it.

I did already have the Slydog Powderhounds on it though.

After I put the Backcountry 15x121x1.75 track on it, I have almost no issues in the deep stuff.

Although, I only weight about 150 all geared up :)

Have Fun,
Will

I found this out yesterday. It trenches bad in deep snow. Man is it ever freaking heavy to pull it out of the hole. The snow flap gets right up against the back bumper so its hard to get your hands on it to pull her out. The tunnel is awesome for groomed trail riding.. terrible for really deep snow. I think I smoked another belt in the process.. :o|
