garmin topo 2008

It's okay. Takes up more memory space than the old US Roads and Rec, but the maps are more accurate.

Has anyone upgraded from an earlier version? Garmin is offering a $30 rebate to upgrade and I was wondering if you thought your upgrade was worth the cost.

ToddM,
does it seem worth it over previous version, how much better is it?
thanks

Better in that the maps are current with newer roads shown, but one drawback is the larger size of maps (more memory required). The older GPSes will not hold as much map data.

I put a 512MB micro SD card into my Legend Cx to hold the map data.
Takes longer to download the larger maps into the GPS, too.

As for whether it's worth the upgrade cost? I dunno...

It does have smoother contour lines, better accuracy on roads and MANY more road names (including most of the UP Michigan forest road numbers...which will be a VERY useful upgrade for me), and is a little easier to read, but it's not a huge step up.

I think my very favorite part is the fact that it installs in one swoop on your hard drive. No more need to mess with swapping discs between east/west and all that stuff. I'm sure hacks with more knowledge than I could load the whole thing with the old version, but this one dummy-proofs it. Just click the icon.

Also you can overlay your tracks and waypoints on Google Earth. It's a really cool little toy feature that's fun to play with on the computer, but I'm not sure how much practical benefit I'll get out of it.

Overall. I'm glad I upgraded. I'm sure others will think it's not anything special and a waste of money. Personal choice...

^^^^^^^^^^Pretty much just what he said, same here...

Here's a disadvantage I just discovered while looking at an area that I am VERY familiar with...the new Topo 2008 software shows just about every single private driveway in the UP (these were not on the old version). This would not necessarily be a bad thing because the extra detail is helpful in navigating, except for the fact that the driveways are the same brown color/width/appearance on the GPS screen as the public and forest roads, with no differentiation between them...and they're all labeled "road". This could be quite confusing when exploring forest roads up there, and could very easily result in some people riding down private drives thinking they're public roads...

Just goes to show that having a GPS will NEVER replace the absolute necessity to KNOW WHERE YOU ARE when riding, and to make darn sure you're not riding on private or restricted land. Contrary to what some think, these maps and GPS's are far from fool-proof in identifying public vs. private vs. restricted land/roads/trails.
