Sometimes I feel my sled would pull harder with lower gearing even though I am 19/42 right know with a 151x16x2.25. I can pull over 100 on a flat trail this is a mtn sled I dont feel I need to go that fast I feel it would pull better in the wet soft deep stuff we get here sometimes with lower gearing. I bought some 18/43 gears to try. My clutching is working great. Any opinions?

19/42 at wich elevation ?
because 19/42 is plenty strong. Am running 18/40 with a 162 x 16 x 2.5 and its really really strong.
But 19/42, youre probably not running a real 100 mph. More 85.
And yes, its plenty fast.

If you go lower on the gear ratio you'll have to add more weight to the primary to keep your rpms the same. Also by lowering the gear ratio the speedo doesn't change as it's running off the driveshaft, but these speedos are off from the factory by a about 10% or so. One more thing to think about is with a 18 tooth gaer you need to make sure that it is always adjusted with very little slack because they strip the teeth off real easy with that small diameter , Ken.

Tundra,
What track speed are you seeing with that 162 x16x2.5? I think the lower I go the faster in the deep stuff that puts more drag on I should be able to go but I am only 151x16x2.25 riding anywhere from 0-6000 ft depends where I am at in Ak. Valdez gets up there in elevation. Of course if you have so much power that you can pull faster than the gearing you have in the deep than only then will lower gearing slow you down if you are too low for your power, Correct? I am thinking of trying it but currently not at home with my sled but back on the 21st. Later, Justin

Vmax4, you are on the right track, try a black marker on the primary from top to bottom and go for a blast in the powder, then check the primary shiv to see how much of the mark is left at the top of the shiv. If more than 1/4 " shows try gearing down and do it again. Remember to jot down your rpm and track speed for each test.

I think I will bring all my tools and some extra chaincase lube next ride and do a test on it. Thanks, later

I am running my mnt. sled with a 19/40 gears. I found that it didnt make much of a difference from a 20/40. I put a team secondary on, with a 54/36 helix and it pulls way harder and my top end speed actually went up. Just my 2 pennys but definately the best $400 spent todate.

i'm bought some 19/42 gears and i can't them to fit cause the chain is way too tight. I'm trying to use the OEM 68link chain. did anyone else have this problem or should i try a 70 link chain.
