I have an 08 Nytro RTX. I believe the stock gears are 39/21. What are teh effects of replacing the 39t with something smaller like a 38t or 37t gear? Does this give you more acceleration of more top end? And what do you need to do with the bottom gear and chain? Has anybody put in a smaller gear and what were the results? I have 3 sets of gears for my 96 VMAX4 that I(a friend of mine, I was simply the rider) would change out depending on the length of the run, but I can't remember what combonation of gears did what. I know the VMAX also needed new jets. Would the Nytro need anything similar? I know it's injected so not sure how that would compare.

A smaller gear on the bottom, will give you a higher top speed, a bigger bottom gear will give you better acceleration and a slower top speed(in theory) however I have found that sometimes you can gear down and gain acceleration and top end speed. It all depends how many teeth you change.

I swapped out my top gear (21 tooth) for a 20 tooth on my XTX when I did my track swap, looking back I think I should have left the gearing alone, from what I am hearing with the torque of the 4 strokes you don't need to gear down like you do with a 2 stroke.

I geared my Nytro last seson to 22/38 as that way you can still use the stock 68 link chain...pooped the bed...I gained nothing and in fact my sled was slower. Keeping in mine that my sled has all the bolt ons and I weight 225lbs without gear on. If you are a lighter guy ( 200lbs or less ) gearing may work...but I will be going back to stock this year as my sled was much faster that way.

I weigh 200lbs and am running a 22/39 with a bit longer chain. I gained about 5mph on the top end making a grand total of 106MPH on the GPS. Keep in mind that I am also running the full Hindle exhaust. If you are not sure what you need here is a site that breaks it down very well from Pioneer Perf.

http://pioneerperformance.net/pp_clutch_page.htm

At the bottom of the page it lists the size chains needed for the different gearing.
