Hey Guys,
OK, here's what I got. '03 shorty, Hauck Magnum roller secondary, OSO primary turning 10,500. 128 studs. All else is stock. Now here's the question: I weigh 165 and travel light on mainly groomed trails. I do occasionally drag and would like to keep the drag performance I currently have, or better of course. Without losing any drag performance, can I gear up some for better mileage and more top end? I haven't played with the stock gearing any, but I'm pretty light and I'm thiniking it would hook a little better and obviously have more top end with a little less gear. Thoughts? Also, how many teeth can I add before I need to replace the chain. Thanks for the info

Gear up 1 tooth on top. If you don,t have reverse top gear is a 24 & a 25 will fit. This will be fine for a lighter rider & 10,500 rpm is too high anyway.

Turk,
What about a speed ring? Hartman also says the dayco belt will help you shift out farther. Shimming the helix?
Red2003, you should be able to find a gearing chart in the service manual linked in the FAQ section

Hmmm, let's see. I DO have reverse, should have stated that. Not sure what a speed ring is, but the Hauck Magnum roller is machined for full shift out, so that's already as good as its gonna get. Turk, why do you say 10,500 is too high? Yamaha manual says full shift out is 10,250 +/- 250, so I'm right there. My question was simply if you guys think I can gain any by gearing up. The sled is fast right now, especially with my skinny butt on there, I was just looking for something a little better. Maybe I should leave well enough alone :~).

you can change the top gear with or without reverse, they are the same. you can go as high as a 26 tooth on top from micro belmont. they also make a 42 reverse bottom gear. i would stay away from overdrive sheaves as the belt angles dont line up and to get full shift out from them your center to center must be closer or you risk blowing belts. if you do use the overdrive sheave move c to c in abt. 150 to 180 thou. and gear down(smaller on top) 1 tooth. if your sled runs good i would leave it alone.
