There's a 2009 MP for sale locally for a really good price so I'm going to have a look. After a year on AC, I'd like to have a Yamaha again. I went from a 2007 Phazer which was extremely fun but very problematic (I have to admit it was beaten on regulary) to an 800 XF High Country. I would love a Viper but having the same sled in a 2t, it doesn't make sense this year. I have 2 small children and a wife and I burn wood for heat so I'm looking for a do-it-all kind of sled. I will be spending most of my time OFF TRAIL. Is this sled going to be a bear off the groomed trails? I already have a set of 7" Powderhounds for it. Also comes with a 2 up seat which is nice. Basically wondering if it can be a fun sled with equal parts family hauler and work sled. Thanks for any input.

You'll love it. The 16" wide track will give you that extra floatation and along with the Powderhounds, you'll be fine. Plenty of torque to pull stuff since it is geared a bit lower than the VL and Phazer. There's a guy that did a video review on the MP for hauling:

Since you've had a Phazer, you'll know what to look for, like loose steering, worn hyfax, etc. since this is basically just an overgrown Phazer. Being an '09, it will have the updated rear suspension (reinforced H-arm/harder cross shaft) and the update for the cold weather start as well as the other improvements that we didn't get. Check that the front skid shock isn't damaged from stretched out limiter straps and the shaft banging out the top of the shock.

Be forewarned, it is not a boondocker. It weighs over 600 lbs and if it does get stuck, she'll be stuck but I have yet to get mine stuck. My sons did but just by being stupid. I actually had to ditchbang mine once when I accidentally went off the trail and wound up in deep powder. Just throttled through it. Another time I hit a really high and long drift and it just floated through it.
