Use what Yamaha recomends. Buy a Yamaha filter for it and use the Yamaha 0-W30 semi synthetic oil. Why even consider anything else? You should be able to change your own oil for about 35-40 bucks and do it once a year.
Ok so i only have 556 miles on my sled !! Should i put synthetic in or wait?? thanks

It is recommended after 500 miles. As someone alluded to above, this topic has been covered, with no real answer as to the semi-synth vs synthetic issue.
Best I can figure is that for snowmobiles, an oil should contain friction modifiers to help extend the life of the engine. Friction modifiers are used in engines that do not make use of their oil for alternate lubrication purposes (clutches etc). Yamaha's new synthetic oil has no friction modifiers because it is essentially designed for sport bikes that share lubrication.
Mobil 1 and other oils are essentially designed for use in automobiles and therefore some do contain friction modifiers.
My feeling is that if you can get an oil that has the modifiers, and is synthetic, especially at a cheaper price than yamalube, then why not go that route.
You'll get a thousand different answers. Some people really believe in following manufacturer recommendations, or supporting their dealers. I believe in bang for the buck and therefore I went with Amsoil full synthetic on my oil change. The difference in price was $5 per litre cheaper for the amsoil full synthetic, and although my sled doesn't spend very many nights outside, I'd rather have the synthetic in the colder climate.

It cost me over $70 for oil and filter from my dealer. I'll likely look elsewhere next year.

From page 48 of the owner's manual:
Be sure to change the engine oil after the first 800 km (500 mi) of operation, and every 4000 km (2500 mi) thereafter or at the start of a new season, otherwise the engine will wear quickly.
The oil filter cartridge should be replaced every 20000 km (1200 mi) of operation.
Seems straight forward to me.

Leave it for longer. You're past the *critical* part of breakin, but its NOT fully broken in! Your typical north american made 2-stroke will need to be rebuilt after the first 2000 miles, your typical japanese 4-stroke will be just broken in. There's no reason to rush for the synthetic, just keep using desert oil until AT LEAST 1000 miles, but preferably around 2000+.

How could this be a straight forward answer to this guy's question?
You aren't even answering his question.

I switched over to mobil 1 full synthetic right after the 500 mi with no problems yet...

Point taken. I will speak to my people so this does not happen again, today.
