I was thinking that it'd be nice to GPS a sled so that it could be found if it was stolen, and also to communicate back to a smartphone so my family would be able to locate me if anything went awry ( I ride alone often). Has anyone seen a system that could be set up to send a signal even if the sled is off?, and one that doesn't require monthly fees to work? I've found some transmitters on secuirty sites but they usually run batteries that I wouldn't trust to work, or are pretty expensive monthly.

If you google gps tracker you will find plenty.
There is a monthly subscription service for most of them
If you are riding where there is cell signal you can install
google latitude o your phone. It works pretty good.
This is what I have. and it is free

There's the SPOT for personal safety. Push a button to send a message and GPS coordinates for people to find you.

What you want for the sled's protection would be something like a Lowjack for cars which is activated after it's stolen. Any independent tracking device will require a cell subscription to be able to communicate constantly. There has to be a connection of some kind to work, whether cell or satellite data.

I think when I go sledding this winter in places where I know I will have some cell coverage, I may send a Glympse to anyone that is expecting me at a particular time or place. At least they will know if I have stopped moving or am going in the wrong direction for some odd reason.

There is a free app download for iPhone and Android. Obviously this will not replace a good GPS tracker/transmitter. But for those of us cheapskates that ride in areas with cell coverage, it may be a cool safety net.
I have used it on bike trips, or late night road trips when there is a good chance of falling asleep, or hitting a bambi. My wife likes to know that my truck/bike is still going in the right direction. It's an option!
Good luck!
