According to Can-Am their big quads are bigger, badder and faster.

Yup... That would be correct.

Or is the Can-Am Outlander a sport bike disguised as a utility bike? Coming stock with no skid plates does make a person wonder. From the pics I have seen of the Renegade, it really looks like a 4WD sport bike.
Maybe I'm mistaken, but when looking at a utility quad speed is not the highest thing on my priority list. I mean you can only go over rocks and logs so fast, let alone a muddy hillside.

I totally agree, speed is not the #1 priority when it comes to utility machines. If you want to go fast, buy a sport quad or the crossover quads like a scrambler, wolverine, renegade, etc..........

It all depends what you're doing. There are some quads that will beat the grizz in one area but not necessarily in others.

i tried a grizz 700 and a 650 rincon over the weekend, both had snow tracks on it,this is where the grizz shines,it steered so easy it was hard to believe but the honda,it didnt steer at all,we were in crusty snow so everything was hard packed but the bikes were sinking about 6 '' so it was hard to get out of that track but the grizz was effortless,i want one

Sorry, but you'll have a hard time with any of the V-Twins in a 300ft race. (acceleration)

In a drag race alot of the twins will win but these machines are not for straight line drag races and if a manufacturer makes a 4x4 quad so it will win a drag race then they are missing the point. I know that my 660 grizz looses to my buddies 700 sportsman (twin) but only on mid to top end. When I just touch my throttle I have all the torqu I need for rough, muddy, hard core trails. His twin has to build power by building rpms. So although it is a little faster it wont hold a candle to my grizzly in the rough stuff. The power output of a single cylinder 4 stroke is perfect for a 4x4 quad. All the power you need is available right off idle by just touching the throttle. You dont have to build 1/2 your rpm's to get power out of your machine. Even though his is faster I would never want to trade my engine design for his.

The importance to some of who will win a straight line drag race with utility bikes has always mystified me. I just want to get to where I want to go, haul the gear I need to haul, Drag what I need to drag, over or through the terrain I need to get through. Safety and reliability are prime, closely followed by ride comfort. Power helps get the job done, but you can only go so fast on a trail in the woods, going up a steep muddy hillside, or crossing a creek. I doubt I have ever exceeded 10 mph hauling a deer out of my favorite hunting spot. If you want to win drag races buy a sport bike.

In the January edition DW had a 650-700 Big Bore shootout. The 700 Grizz won overall. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but won none-the-less.

I spent the May long weekend out with some friends. There was an 06 Grizz 660, an 06 700 Kingquad, an 06 outlander 800, an 06 500 Foreman, an 07 Chinese 500 copy of a Grizz 660, and my 07 Grizz 700. As far as the Big Bore bikes went, it was who ever wanted to get there first. The 700 seemed to pull hard a bit longer than the 660. The guy who rode the Outlander, had come off the side of a mountain on his Raptor 3 years ago and spent 8 months recovering. I doubt he was riding that 800 to it's limit. My point, like many others who have posted here is, that when you are riding in terrain that these sport ute's are built for, you'll seldom be out of low range, let alone over 40 mph. I use my 700 a lot for transport around home and it's nice to cruise at half throttle at 50 mph down the gravel road 4 miles to a buddys, but at 65mph flat out, I don't think I would want to go any faster on that thing. It's just not balanced or suspended right for that kind of speed on uneven ground. At 80mph, someone is just looking to get hurt.
Just my thoughts.
