I plan on adding 136 rail extensions to the phazer ... the problem is I am having a hard time finding an fx, although I can get a GT at a decent price.
What is the down fall with the GT vs the FX and what I want to do with it.

Gina,
The main down fall with what you intend to do will be the taller gearing on the GT. After that you will find softer rear springs, a gas cell vs. clicker shock in the rear, straight vs. clicker shocks in the front and straight vs. hooked handlebars. Otherwise, they're pretty much the same.
On the plus side you get a bigger window and nifty air deflectors with the GT Woo Hoo
(Donna and I have one of each)

Bleeder ... leave it to you to have one of each! LOL
You know how I ride, do you think I would be happy if I settled for the GT?
LMAO ... I just noticed your profile pic ... that is me behind you! Gosh that is an old picture ... you have that silly grin since I think it was your first ride on your RX1! LOL

Has it really been that long? Time sure flies when you're having fun.
Personally, I think the differences between the two are a bit like splitting hairs and you should be fine with the GT. As far as Donna is concerned, hers is red, mine is blue and both have seats that feel like a thong.
BTW, I'm told that I always have that silly grin on my face.

The only thing that you could say is "bad" are the shocks. The FX has shocks that are better for an aggressive rider.
You could always upgrade to the GYT-Rs though.

I've got a GT, havn't riden an Fx, so I can't compare but I ride it as hard as I can and think the shocks are just fine. I think the rear torsion springs are weak, cause the sled sags without me even on it, but I really like the winshield. I think the short windshield looks stupid(sorry) sometimes I take the whole thing off, if we're going riding in the woods, or going under gates and stuff, but I didn't even realize my coat had unzipped down to midchest untill I switched sleds with a friend with an F7, then my neck froze. And I like the White colorscheme! Not having had a Yami before I didn't want blue. White was only available in GT so thatz what I got. Why don't you get the Longtrack one? it's in white? I didn't want one cause it wont fit in my trailer, but You're extending a regular one so buy the long one instead. My 2 centz

I was leaning toward the mountain to begin with, but while talking with others I was informed that the suspension on the mnt isn't so hot and the ski stance is much to be desired ... so that would leave me adding a new suspension and widening the ski stance, way more money than I care to stick in to a sled (unless of course I came across a smoking deal on a mtn)
I guess with the feedback I could go GT and see how I like it, chances are it would be ok ...
as far as color, I don't really care ... I just want to be happy with my set up!

Let's hold on to your checkbook a minute and itemize what you're building here so you don't end up spending more in the long run to get the sled to suit your riding.
Correct me if I'm wrong but your preferred riding is off-trail in the UP with occasional trips out West. Pretty much a classic "Crossover" sled description.
Side by side, the FX and GT are not all that different but once you change the skid and track the differences will become more apparent starting with the gearing. The FX gearing will be much more suited to pulling the extra load and work better in off-trail situations.
The suspension in the GT is similar to the Mtn in that it's soft and you've already determined more is required so the FX also gets the nod here.
Last but not least, and this is just my observation from riding with you, I believe you'll be much happier with the hooked bars from the FX.
Anyway, If I were building a crossover Phazer, I would start with the FX simply to minimize the amount of parts I'd have to change.
Good luck in whatever you decide and I hope to see you and yours in Muni.

It is geared different too?
Majority of my riding is off trail, back country ... reason for extending ... I spend little time on groomed trails, but still need something that is trailable
I would want something geared down more right? Is that the right term ... seems like my viper was geared down.

Exactly right Steve ... in a nut shell that is why I was leaning toward the FX to begin with ...

That is correct, as reference regarding gearing:yamahagirl said:It is geared different too?

Mountain = 17 - 41
FX = 18 - 41
GT = 20 - 41

Get a mountain and put on a better set of front shocks. That will be the easiest fit, most likely the cheapest. It comes with a fan, no overheating problems. Better traction and floatation off trails. Either way you should be happy

I have a GT so I am biased. Hoever I am glad with my decision because.
GT better geared for trail riding and higher top speed.

GT suspension is more comfort oriented, really soaks up the trail nicely, but some heavier riders such as me (230) expereince it is too soft and bottom out.

GT front suspension is slightly lower and is set for less play from factory for better handling.
FX has better shocks (firmer, adjustable) but those shocks have their problems as well. Moot point if your going to replace the shocks on either model anyways.

GT chances are you wont experience a broken link.
GT is of course warmer with the knee deflectors and windshield.
To me, so far, I am very happy with my purchase but am going to consider a rear shock upgrade soon.
