It was for me because I like to tinker with the suspension and have become spoiled by using excellent shocks in the past.

My buddy had an ER and loved it. It's all preference, and if you think you'll play with the settings at all. If you won't, just buy the ER or RTX.

IMO the clickers only advantage are in the rough. Because of the higher oil capacity they are more fade resistant. I installed a pair on my Attak but didn't notice an improvement and yes I adjusted them. So I put the stockers back on and sold them. Keep in mind; this is my opinion from my experiances..........

I have 'not' rode an Apex GT so I cant comment on it but for what its worth...I ride my ER very aggressive and I love the shocks. As I was told before..."its not like Yamaha shocks are bad to begin with, the stockers are plenty good". The ride quality of the ER is great(groomed trails, rough trails etc.). I weigh 240lbs so I upped the rear spring to the 6.5 Big Boy Spring(Port Yamaha, $87). I keep the rear at about/around 15 clicks(on tunnel adjuster dial) towards harder and bottoming out is very rare. The front shocks are set on mine where the A-arms are little above parallel. I still need to tinker with taking some preload out and bringing the A-arms down closer to parallel(the word is it should allow better cornering). I highly recommend the ER. Anytime after riding 100+ hard miles...this is the first sled where I do not wake up sore the next day. Not sure if you are looking at an '06 or an '07 but a few guys on the forum here had/have problems with the rear shock on the '06 GT's. Send a PM to 'Welterracer'...he should be able to tell you all about the GT shocks.
Good luck with your choice. If it was me...I would save the money.

I think if I had to do it again I would not have got a GT, I have spent to much time at the dealer with 4 broken shock wires, and 2 blown shocks. Good thing I have the 5 year warranty!!

Have ridden both machines and for easy trail ridding there is no difference. If you like to dial things in perfect for your weight, ridding style and snow conditions, you need the GT. The 06's had some issues with the rear shock, both wire and valving, but not many having problems with the 07's. 1700 miles on my 07, no broken wire, have bottomed less than a dozen times at 190 pounds.
I love the suspension on my ER, back is perfect the way it it. 3 clicks off of max hard and it sooks up about everything. Will bottom on the realy big stuff though. Front i wish i had the GT clickers on it for adjustability, but the stockers are fine. I have them set pretty soft to and have yet to bottom out the front.

IMO buy the Apex ER and save yourself some money. With the money you've saved buy some Fox floats and add them to the front of the ER sled. You'll have a better sled suspension wise and still would have spent less money than a GT.

Very happy with the ride of my ER as well. Rode over 400 miles in 3 days and had I had people to ride more with I would have. This was my first real ride on my new-to-me ER and I didn't even bother adjusting the suspension for my weight and riding style. I weigh about 260 with gear and had the rear suspension set 4 clicks from the hardest setting and did bottom a few times, but I didn't feel it was too bad. No complaints about the stock front shocks, as they soaked up even some bigger moguls with ease.
I had an apex GT in 2006 & I felt the front shocks affected the ride much more than the back. I got rid of Apex and got 2006 Attak. I added the GT front shocks on it. I can't say enough about how well I like the Attak. I think the shocks are a good investment.

Hmmm interesting my next question was Attak or Apex, why did you switch???
And thanks guys I'm going to go with a ER.
As for the Fox floats I have them on my F7 and I don't really care for them. The more air you put in the higher the front end stands. lower the air and she sits fine, but now too soft.

I love the ride of the GT, but but but after 4 broken wires and time lost to the dealership, I would not get the GT again. My question is what is Yamaha doing to better protect the wire for 08. All these new sleds with the electric shock they have to develop better protection for the wire or there will be a lot of unhappy riders. The reason I purchased the GT was just for the shock, and that is the only thing that I am unhappy with, go figure.
