Get gauntlets, no cold air hits the bar and you have to turn them down with thin gloves on even.

An '05 should have good Grip Warmers. If I recall correctly, it was in '06 that they changed them and they no longer worked well. Have you tested the Grip Warmers to ensure they are working? And, How cold is cold? Are they warming or just not working at all?
Is your charging voltage > 13.8 VDC across the battery when above 3K RPM? Have you load tested your battery lately?

x2 I have 2 - 05's an 03 shorty and 03 mountain and all 4 will burn your hands. My 06 Apex another story. You are either disconnected or a bad fuse/relay. I was riding at -20 2 weeks ago and no problems. On another note I just got a pr. of gauntlets and now ride with no gloves.

I have a 05 and I'm not impressed with the warmers as well. Gauntlets or larger windshield helps big time. I went the touring windshield on mine. Its the large replacement for the touring sled. I.E. its larger then the stock touring windshield.
I added Rocks Yamaheater only because when the sled idles the heaters are off. Turning the Yamaheater on give full power to the warmers and gets the bars warm before you ride. Also helps if you stop and get off the sled for any reason. Once the sled idles the bars get cold again. Not a problem if you ride in warm temps but at -30 even left on full all the time the heaters are marginal.
I have trouble with my hands and once they get cold I have a bear of a time getting them warm again. Froze them to many times in the early days of sledding I guess.
Wish Yamaha had heaters like my Cat. Those work at -40. Mr Sled installed a set of Cat heaters in the bars of his 06 sled. Would turn them on low then regulate with the Yamaha heaters for comfort. Because the Cat heaters go inside the bars you can run both at the same time. I think one would have to be careful because with both on high you could melt things.
So the no1 answer to the question is better wind protection for your hands. I'd try that first. This is of course assuming the warmers are in working order on your sled.
