Headsock question

Why would you ever try to drink through a balaclava? We stop in bars, where you take your stuff anyway.

If it's below zero, it's the best protection. I wear a lighter version when it is above 20 degrees as it is too warm.

No need to get snide... Obviously you can't drink THROUGH a balaclava, and if you looked at the link I posted you don't have to take the balaclava off to do anything with your mouth or nose. . Some people don't have the luxury of having bars at trailsides... Plus I don't drink alcohol while I ride and would rather be riding and have short stops to rehydrate and have a bite to eat, than hanging out at a bar.

I gave him my opinion on a good headsock, and my experience with the klim, no need for an overpriced balaclava with a breath box when you have a nice helmet and goggles.

Nothing snide about it at all. Sorry you took it that way. You said, "you have to take everything off" as if you didn't normally. It's an easy misunderstanding the way you stated it.

Bars are the only thing trailside for food and drink, doesn't mean everyone is drinking alcohol. Oh, and we have to take our gear off to eat as well. I havn't found the right gear to filter a cheesburger through yet! (smile)

Quality and warmth are all dependent on what temps you ride in. As others stated above, in the temps we ride, if you don't have a breathbox, you get ice buildup. And if you have bare skin, you get frostbite. How many have used duct tape on the corners around the eyes (all of us up North) so this one, I have yet to have the need for Duct tape, or an ice chipper to get my facial hair free on breaks. That's a big plus.

I have a couple of these balaclava's from No-Fog and they work really well with my open MX helmet. Using this balaclava with an MX I find it quieter and warmer than my full face helmet. They have velcro on them so you can adjust the fit. I think the key is the piece that covers your nose. It provides a good seal to the goggles.

One of the most important things when wearing a MX helmet is that the oval shaped eye hole is not too wide. I want my goggles to cover nicely with no air gap. Klim makes some really nice stuff.....I have 3 of their balcavas, but I really like my articva brand balcava. The only draw back with it is it is not real long, so I wear a neck warmer also.....a klim neck warmer.

I have had good cold weather REAL COLD like -30 f and others colder with a Canadian product. UNWIND balaclava warm for me. Noticed all the Cold weather Manitba and Ontario guys we rode with had them

I am going to get one of the unwind balaclava, they sound very nice, that is what the guys from canada say. I think that you can only get them in canada. I haven't found a dealer in the U.S. They were sold out last year when I went to order.

I have 2 Unwind balaclava which are great for my full face helmet but the eye holes are too big for my MX helmet with Scott google. That's when I use the Klim Arctic Balaclava.

I really like the Doo Balaclava I got with my BVS2. Windproof yet tucks in the jacket nicely and has a thin upper head cover so my doesn't sweat except in near 0C temps. Toasty warm even at -30 to -40C!
