I recently had a near burn down on the trail. This summer I installed the straightline ulmer header.

First trip out the bolts that connect the mid pipe to header slacked off. My fault for not retightenig in time , with new gaskets.
Luckily I smelt the hood melting before it caught up.

I decided I would make a better quality heat blanket to protect the plastic side panels.

My new blanket is made from lagging that is used on Diesel engine exhausts in the marine industry. Also stainless mesh was used on the back side to protect the lagging from browning up where there is contact with the exhaust pipe.

I put a small bolt in the plastic to hold the blanket out and keep from flopping around ( stock there is Velcro).
I'll post how it holds up after next weeks ride.

Third pic is my old burned up stock blanket.

Wow glad you caught that. Good job

thats the hard part. i have the access to lagging. you would need to find a shop with lagging like this. very simple to make if you can find it.

heat blanket looks good.
I hate that cheap foil covered crap that comes with the sled.
Are you saying to re torque the header to muffler bolts after its been run a bit? Or did you just not tighten yours enough?
You running the stock gasket or copper gasket?

Here's what happend. I used new gaskets from ulmer. They are not multi layer metal gaskets likes the stock ones. They require a retorque after being compressed and heated. I did torque them to spec

I wonder how the header to engine gasket is doing ,it's the same silver soft gasket on mine but I used the copper Hurricane gasket at the turbo!

The engine came loose also.

Ok! So I guess I'll have to open it up! How many k since the installation? I was going to go for a ride in the morning for a few hrs and I've got 120k since I put it on.

That was the muffler joint! I have a copper gasket in there. The header/ head gasket I was wondering about and I would hear that I'm sure. My Hurricane quiet muffler is wisper quiet!

Is it really quiet? Just really worry about fire. I have come close myself in past and saw one go down way back. Really felt sorry for the owner and remember the look on his face watching it burn.
