OK I was under the RTX this morning making sure everything is good to go, transfer rods equal, no loose wheels, delamination etc... and for some reason I looked up.

I have been under it a bunch of times but never looked up. I was looking directly at my exhaust for the back portion of it?

I had the studs installed at the dealer when I bought it, then had some more added. Is it possible they just took the heat shield out and didnt bother to tell me? Anyone else done this?

Im really not concerned as its been like that for 1000 plus miles.... just thought it was odd that I never noticed before. But Im going to pay attention now when stuck in low snow conditions that no mud/grass gets thrown up on the hot pipe.

My 07ApexER has the exhaust system exposed except for the tunnel protectors between it and the track. As far as I know they all come like that.

Yep...thats the way it is.

Thanks, just assumed maybe the pulled it off there for the studding.

You just discovered the reason for all the ice build-up on the tunnel.

yea it builds ice for sure. i just took mine off for an aftermarket exhaust and the heat sheild is on top to protect the seat.

The heat shield is only above the exhaust. The bottom of the exhaust is exposed. That's why I installed a rear heat exchanger, to melt the ice buildup.

Anyone tried closing off the top of the tunnel? Obviously Yamaha engineers want the exhaust cooled, but I wonder what the downsides are if it were closed.... (Hot seat, melted plastics??)

Guys on Phazers have closed their tunnels with no ill effect reported from what I have found. Wouldn't it be nice with less ice?
