What are you guys using for replacing the heat shield material for the heat shield under the tank to cover the flex joints? I can't find any in the parts breakdown and haven't really found anything. I was just thinking a few layers of heat tape......would that be enough? I do have a full Hindle exhaust now.

I just used the Moose racing heat shield sheets. I got them from Royal Distributing.

Here are some pics of install. I have not checked how they are holding up, all I can report is I did not catch fire last year....

Hindle with moose heat shield

Here's a picture- it has PSA tape on the back, silicone foam in the center and aluminum foil on the front. I think it's good to almost 400F and looks like what some of the plastic parts are lined with but I'm not sure if this is what's under the flex pipes.

My dealer ended up having some on hand......find out what it is tomorrow afternoon. Think it's the moose stuff. The McMaster stuff looks like pretty solid!

I bought the same stuff from royal and when I put a heat pun to it out of curiosity it bubbled right up in no time at all. And when I put flames to it (I know there is not suppose to have flames in there and it is a heat shield not a fire wall) it cought fire and kept burning.

It just worried me too much and I went to my dealer and bought a new heat shield. Downside is you need to buy the whole thing, metal cover and all to get the heat shield, not cheap.

Maybe it does not get as hot as I think but I was not about to risk it and bought a new one from yamaha as I was not all that impressed by the one I bought from royal and it was snowing out lol.

I had an interesting deal the other day. I started up my sled and let it run for a while when smoke started coming out from in between the motor & fuel tank. I shut the sled off and could not see anything. It continued to smoke. I looked up into the tunnel and could see embers inside the exhaust box. They eventually went out. I pulled the tank and opened the box to find all sorts of crap. Pine needles, twigs, and misc debris. I took my shop vac and sucked up everything that didn't belong. I also sucked up some of the heat shield material. I put it back together and really didn't think much about it. In all reality when the sled is running there will be plenty of snow and water being thrown from the track and getting through the openings around the pipes to keep it cool and put out any small brush fires. ;)! Just my $.02

I wonder if header wrap would work? We ran it on go-kart header pipes and it worked great. It would be a bit tricky getting it wrapped, but it would solve all heat problems. Start it around the pipe and secure it with stainless safety wire and get to wrapping. I would do one and three then do two and take that all the way down to the mid pipe.

I've used the Moose Racing material. I also rivited strips of aluminum across the mat to secure it place.
