Just comfirming that you can take the underneath heat shield off the sled without any issues with hitting the exaust. Mine is cracked at the first rivot and the rattle is getting annoying. What is the best way to do a clean job on this? is there any worry about tearing the track after it is off, it looks like the rivot is secured to a braket on the pipe, is this correct? I have 1.325's and all I have is a couple of minor scrapes on the shield, is this what caused it to crack or just poor design?

I have a rattle, which I believe is coming from one of the exhaust heat shields on my 03 RX-1. It's not the one at the rear, as that one had been replaced by the dealer in the early part of this season, and is still tight and in one piece. That leaves the two forward shields as being suspect. Can anyone that have removed these, provide insight as to the best way to get at them? I'm thinking about taking them off altogether. Also, any of you who have removed these, could you confirm that there are still no ill effects!! Thanks.

Yeah, my front shields were rattling like mad. It is actually a resonance that makes them vibrate. Just take the handle from a shovel or something, and bend them a bit until they become quiet. If you still want to remove them, you'll be removing the skid to get at them.

I added extrovert drivers to my 03 mtn in November and noticed the rear and right front shield broken and ready to fall off. I just removed these and kept the left front on because it was not broken.

So about January after putting another 900 miles on the sled the one remaining shield started rattling. Thought to myself I should have ripped that one out when I had it all apart. I had to drop the rear and middle skid bolts and I was just able to reach up to the remaining shield and take it out with a airchisel.

I run a 2-inch paddle track and never had any problems with the track hitting the headers. My advice is to remove all the shields and be done with it. I'm surprise I havn't read about a sheild falling off and spearing the bulkhead exhanger. Removing the skid is the easiest way to get to them and since you have 2 years on a 03 buy a couple of hyfaxes and replace those as well.

My first shield (rear) departed at speed at about 1100mi. Caused no damage to the tunnel whatsoever. I was running a 1.25 track with 1.325 studs, there were scratches in the shield before it left but none ever appeared in the pipes after.

Early this season the front shields started to rattle, I removed the skid, and removed all the remaining shields. I have run over 1000mi since, no problems.

A few weeks ago I changed skids and lowered the sled for lake running, there have been no ill effects from removing the shielding.
