Helmet Communicators choices

I use the Sena on my harley and sled for music and GPS. My garmin zumo takes care of both right on the screen. I can even place and answer phone calls from the gps. Sound quality is excellent. More and more of my riding buddy's have been buying them and while the range isn't ridiculous it is good enough. I lead the pack and if something happens in the back and I'm out of range they just call my phone. I have talked to people while on the highway on the harley and no one has ever had an issue hearing me.

i have the scalarider g9. mine is a bit weird as it does not like linking up with others easily but just reflashed it so should be no problems. lasts all day riding and i can work the buttons with my gloves on. used it all summer on my bike helmet and it would last a full week commuting back and forth using the built in radio. only problem i have is it is not quite loud enough with the gytr silencer on my wr250x. on the sled it is perfect.

Does anyone know if uclear will pick-up the groomer beacon? Second: I have the BRP Modular II helmet & mask so I would be VERY INTERESTED to hear from someone who uses the uclear with that all-be-it, cumbersome but effective, setup?

Also would like to know this.....

I've got the BV2S. Not the same helmet but has the same issue with the mask. People can hear me but it's pretty muffled and I have to repeat myself a lot. If the uclear has a boom mic you might have an issue. I wear a modular in the summer and the boom was a pain in the #*$&@. Sena offers a set up with a little velcro backed mike that I put underneath the liner of the cheek pad facing forward in the helmet and it works pretty good. In the BV2S I use the same type of mic in the front next to where the mask hinges down.

Our group has been using Chatterbox for a few years now and the mic is a pain. You also have to wait for the other person to stop talking (not that we interrupt someone) but there is a delay. They pick up back ground noise at high speeds. We looked at all models and decided to try the uclear this year. We have used them for only 2 days of riding so far and they are amazing. No waiting to talk, very little if any back ground noise, volume increases as the noise does, Bluetooth for music and phone are great. We have the speakers that have the mic built in and we wear face masks with no issues. Easy setup and install and small. One thing to look at is the range of the units. .4 miles. That range works for us as we don't get that far apart. Linking more together gives you a greater distance also. This is MHO.

So with me using a Modular 2 helmet and can only hear out of my right ear, will I will be able to speak so others can hear me and I will be able to hear well enough?

We have modular helmets and I do not have the best hearing and they work great. I now I have bad hearing and that has been confirmed by my wife!

I don't know how the mic will work in the Modular 2 helmet; I suspect that you will sound "muffled" and might be harder for the others to understand. UClear does make speakers that have an extension on the mics that might help. As to your ability to hear; I have less than 10% of hearing in my right ear, and only about 65% in my left. I have only used them on the motorcycles so far, but I have had no trouble hearing and understanding what others are saying with the UClear communicators. I have heard great things from others who have used them on sleds.

We had the Colletts for years also, but have upgraded to the new Collett Doofone model for the DMS and bluetooth about 2 years ago and we love them. We use the same unit attached with velco to either the Modular BRP for the cold days or the open face with goggles for the not so cold days. Just ordered extra set of wires/speakes so the helmets are plug and play. We also use the same Colletts in the summer for dirt bikes. I am on call some weekends for work so being close to the phone is important. With the bluetooth connected to my phone I can take a phone call while out boondocking and shredding the powder!

Unfortunately, it looks like Collett is the only manufacturer that makes/supplies groomers with the beacon. That being said, there's no guarantee that all groomers are outfitted with them either.

IMHO: It's still the uclear setup. I think I may pair that with an E-shield for my MII so I can ditch the mask/diapers.

Spoke with reps from Uclear last weekend at the international motorcycle show in NYC. Only issue I have with the uclear is that if you are listening to music via blue tooth you won't receive any communication from another rider. That rules them out for me. Very nice looking unit. Didn't get a chance to speak with the other communicator vendors.

With Collett you can listen to bluetooth music and receive communications from other users no problem. As far the groomer beacon I dont think that a big deal to have, its a neat idea but I dont need it. If your traveling so fast and out of control that beacons warning is not going to help you. I am more worried about the other snowmobiles that think its ok to drive 100mph around blind corners or hills not the groomer . Those type of guys need a beacon on their sled to warn other riders a crazy man is coming. Slow moving groomers are the lease of your worries.

I'll have to retract that statement. It looks like SENA 20S is the unit I'm going to have my eye on now :dunno:

I have now spent a day on the trail with the UClear units and two other riders. I am very pleased with their performance. We all bought new FXR Fuel Modular helmets this year, and the speaker/mics fit neatly into a small pocket that FXR must have made specifically for speakers. The mics "peek" out of the front of the pockets, and worked flawlessly! After using the Colletts for so many years, it was really nice to ride with absolute "quiet" from the communicators, unless someone was actually speaking! The fact that more than one person can talk at one time was also a plus over the Colletts. The only downside was the uncertainty of how much range we actually had. It seemed that with the three units, we were never out of touch. That having been said, all three riders were fairly equal in riding habits, and I generally could see one headlight, if not two, in my mirrors. I am sure that there are a lot of other units out there that may work as well, but I loved not having to worry about all the problems we have had with boom mics over the years.
