I have been an avid follower of this forum for some time now, and see a wealth of knowledge here. Can you guys help me out with setting up my '03 shortie for 1000 ft drag. I've been trying different gear and clutch setups but seem to be chasing my tail here.
Right now I am running dalton clutching w/ DPY57.5 WTS.,Y54R46 HLX,BLACK/BLUE PRI. SPR.,SILVER YAMAHA SEC. @ 70 DEG.,21/40 gearing.I have the 1.25 RIPSAW track, K&N filters, 165 mains, and running at sea level(Newfoundland)

Just out of curiousity what are you running in 1000 feet? I went to some drags the other day with stock trail riding setup 144 carbide tip trail picks and nothig else I ran 95.07. I couldnt hook up for about 75 feet just spun.

I ran 105 with 24/40 gears but was left behind (3 lengths at the line)by another '03 short mostly stock as I can tell, but he had the thing geared dead on, we are running the same clutching and he has stock airbox.with these gears I was topping 132 on speedo on lake runs. no radars here, only mounties !

21/4o gearing is way too low for 1000' om the rx-1. you need about 23-24/40.

23/38 or 22/38 have tried both and either way you better have ice picks or you will spin even more.

Turk, that was my thinking as well, but I just couldn't get the acceleration I needed with the 24 t top. I am thinking that I may have jumped the gun on changing out my top gear...I read a post here the other day about the K&N filters, that if it wasn't setup correctly, as in the jetting , the sled would be not much better than stock. I have the 165 mains now but still running the stock cv springs, wonder if it needs to develop more power for that 23/24 gearing to be effective in 1000 ft?
thoughts?
thoughts?

Mine with stock gears, 8bu-00, and ecp's will show betwwen 117-119 in a measured 1000 feet, so real speed should be between 95 and something??

Hey pedro if you are already running 105 on the gun in 1,000 ft.w/or w/out 24/40 that is real good, unless you are very hooked up,w/no spin off line.

BEAST, I THOUGHT SO AS WELL, BUT IT ISN'T WINNING ME ANY RACES....I TALKED TO FREDDIE AT ECP, GOT SOME SPRINGS COMMIN FOR THIS WEEK, HOPE THIS WILL HELP THE BOTTOM END. THIS THING SPINS OFF THE LINE FOR AT LEAST 100', IF IT HOOKS UP, IT LAUNCHES,BUT WITHOUT STUDDING(WHICH I CAN'T RUN FOR THE RACES) IT LIGHTS UP THE TRACK. I HAVE FULL WEIGHT TRANSFER NOW,NO PROBLEM KEEPIN THE SKIS UP WHEN IT GRABS THE SNOW. JUST CAN'T SEEM TO PULL HARD ENOUGH IN THAT SHORT DISTANCE TO KEEP ME OUT FRONT.I CALLED DALE DALTON TO SEE IF HE COULD RECOMMEND ANOTHER WEIGHT OTHER THAN THE 57.5'S, THE PROFILE IS NOT VERY AGGRESSIVE, BUT REALLY SWEET ON THE TRAILS.

NOT RUNNING ON ICE FIELD, THEY USUALLY ONLY RUN SNOW DRAGS HERE(NO STUDS ALLOWED), AND AS I SAID EARLIER THIS WILL SPIN OFF THE LINE FOR AT LEAST 75-100',WITH THE STOCK TRACK IT WAS ALMOST DOUBLE THAT. AS FOR THE SPEED,IT WAS ON SPEEDO ,AND I'M GUESSING CAUSE IT WAS AT A GLANCE, SO REAL SPEED WOULD BE APPROX. 90 MPH ...??SORRY I DIDN'T CLARIFY WHAT TYPE OF CONDITIONS I WAS RUNNING ON IN MY EARLIER POST.
AFTER TALKING TO SOME OF THE OTHERS, I'M GOING TO INCRESE THE TOP GEAR BACK TO 24 ,AND TRY AND CLUTCH IT TO GET THE TIME DOWN.THIS ENGINE IS PRODUCING AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF TORQUE,JUST NEED TO GET IT SET UP PROPERLY.
APPRECIATE ANY HELP GUYS. REALLY WANT TO KICK A@@ NEXT RACE AND SHOW WHAT THESE SLEDS ARE CAPABLE OF.

THANKS PICKED192,I MAY DO THAT, I WAS HOPING I COULD USE THE 40 TOOTH LOWER TO HELP WITH THE SHORT DISTANCE. I'M GONNA TRY AGAIN AS SOON AS CONDITIONS GET BETTER HERE.

pedro this works for me i run doltons as well only with a green secodary spring the rest of your set up is the same. but i took the belt side clearnce down to .020 on the primary. with this set up it will go over back wards if you let your transfer rods set to long and that with the stock track that every one could not get to hook up. i all so played with gearing and found that the 24-38 worked about the best . hope this helps 8)
