HELP! Buying an M8?

Need some help guys, last year I rode a SC RX-1 (loved it but lacked the handling a Nytro offered) for half the year and then traded it in on a stock Nytro MTX. Love the Nytro, but really lacks power. On some big powder days it just didn't seem to have the grunt I needed - really lacked track speed. Not sure if it's just the Maverick, or added weight but I am seriously considering a M8/M1000 Sno Pro for this year. I was considering a Timbersled Skid and 155" Polaris or 153" Challenger track but will this make any real difference. Has anyone found any real gains, maybe with some clutching/gearing help? Help me!

ditto, and yes the maverick track is a real bummer on this sled. it is not the same maverick that was put on the APEX's and VECTOR's. It has way too soft of paddles.

dont ditch your MTX...have lightweighted my MTX and it can hang with pert near anything...

granted I have done a LOT to my sled, and I went part way...I have a Hybrid MTX

got a cat track going on it will have the 162 PowerClaw on it when it hits the snow this year...GREAT track!!!

biggest issue with you going to 2 smoker again...once you hit 2k miles you are looking at having to do some serious work to it...and since this year I did more than 1300 miles, that means issues in 2 years on your sled...and I prefer to keep mine 4 years...

I'm not concerned about 2 stroke/4 stroke longevity as it seems I am looking for a new sled every year or two. I'm just a "little" diappointed with the power, if a track and lightweight skid will make a significant difference I'm in but I'm not convinced. If I was 100% sure a MPI SC would work and work well I would just go that way (but I've read too many bad posts). Maybe it is the track, it really doesn't seem to offer much traction in deep snow days.

I am in the same boat a you but I'm not quite ready to throw in the towel just yet. I know for a fact that my clutching is just plain wrong as the belt in my primary is probably at still at least 3/4" from reaching the top. IMO the problem with the Nytro is 3 fold. First off and probably the easiest to address is its a bit of a fatty and needs to drop 60-70 lbs. Second problem that I see is if you go onto Excell exhausts website take a look at the dyno chart and you will see that the peak horsepower on the stock Nytro only occurs for a very short time then falls off. I think this is why it has been tougher to maintain track speed than on the RX1/ Apex etc where the power curve is flatter. On the Nytro the clutch is hunting and when it does it drops track speed. It's almost like clutching a 2 stroke. While the Maverick isn't the best track out there I'm not convinced it's the source of all the problems. Even though the Excell or Hauck or whosever you choose exhaust only adds 6 ot 7 hp it carries that power through quite a wide RPM range. The reason it doesn't fall off with the Excell exhaust is because of the increased diameter of the primary tubes on the Excell header. I've done some calulations and measurements and the optimum primary tube size for the Nytro header should be about 1.45" normally aspirated. The ID on the stock pipe is about 1.25". The smaller diameter stock pipe is good for driveablilty and low range power but it is at the expense of high RPM performance which is what you need in a mountain sled. I'm pretty confident I can get 155hp out of this sled with some exhaust and intake work and a RB3 box to play with fuel and timing. Also a set of CR10EK plugs will get a horse or 2. IMO once I get the power delivery a little more consistent then I can work on the track, clutching and all the rest of it. Anyways thats my plan.

you could be right, I only had stock weight and sled for two rides...after that, it got MAJOR diet...and the timbersled was by FAR the most extreme change for this sled...

no idea what it woudl do for flatland riding, but for me in the mountains, it will hang with almost anything because the skid made that dramatic of a difference...will know more this year with teh track, but am holding off on my boost till I get a few more miles on the sled...
