I have for years mostly focused on two strokes other than my sled build. I have kind of lost track of what works and what dont on the newer apexes. I have a friend with one and he is bitching about it being slow and starting hard.
two questions, what is a normal speed for an 2012 xtx, he is getting 104-107 and he did say once on perfect conditions it got up to 117. I have read that the speedos are a little closer to correct, about 4mph closer but still, this seems low on the speed.
are there any known issues to cause this I should have him look for?

also, he has to start the sled 3 times when it is cold. keeps stalling.

I have done some searches but just found some vague comments and nothing much else.

also, what is the rpm to shoot for on these sleds?

This sled is stock and was broke in hard, clutches are now smoothed out and has a newer belt on it. I havent had time to check c-c and the tiny things. Did the extrovers slow these sleds down that much?

I have a friend with an 11 XTX, he said he pulled 110,111 the other day on hard packed trail. The speedo's on the 11 and newer are much closer with in maybe 2 to 3%. the older Apes's wer closer to 12 to 15% off.
So 110/ 111 would be about the same as low to mid 120's.
My twelve 128 has pulled 109/110 on hard pack as well.

These motors hate cold start just give it a little throttle till it warms up. anything lower than -10 Celsius and she's unhappy but after a warm up big smile again. 107-120mph sounds about right. Not fast enough?

Scott, My sled is a 2010 Apex ltx gt and never had any cold starting issues, starts fine at -27 below, comes to high idle and than slows down as it warms up. ( no throttle action needed.) My top speed on hard snow pack is around 118 speedo. I am 100% stock motor wise with just primary spring change to gr-gr-gr, stock sec wrap is 60 degrees.
Has he had any work done to it( filter kit...? air box mod?) maybe fuel mapping not set right?
I am curious also
Terry

I thought the 2011 plus are naturally lean thats why you gain quite a bit with a pc. In perfect condition s most stock apex will see 114 on bare ice with a dusting of snow.

I've encountered the cold start a couple of weeks ago when it dropped below -15. I remember reading about it here and one trick was to hold the key in the cranking position for an extra second, even if the sled has started. Don't worry, it won't grind the starter by doing this. I only do this technique when I first start it after a cold night and haven't had the cold start problem since.

many 2011-2013 have to start 2 or three times when cold. They just fire and stall a couple times and then run good. As far as top end, as others have said, the seedo is close, so 117 is not bad at all. Just a fyi, If it seems to run worse from time to time, make sure your friend is running premium fuel, as the 2011 and up have knock sensors, and if they activate, it will knock your power in the butt.

my stock 06 tops out about 106-114.one really cold day on the Salmon River res,i got er up to 116,thats the fastest i ever been on anything :rules

Pulled 112 on my 12 on speedo the other day on hard rail bed, was not done but road was coming at me at 112.

my 2013 xtx 144 has a 23 top gear and a 128 has a 24 top gear if you change the top gear you will pickup more top speed but lose low end take off what would like more speed?
