What do the springs do?
Please please don't say push something back!

The springs allow the slides to open all the way. The stock springs will not allow the carb slides to open all the way at altitude since the carbs are vaccuum assisted (need atmospheric pressure to work). Higher elevations require less 'spring'.

this might be a dumb question too but if ya just got the stock air box and ya put the springs in will ya get better throttle response than the stock springs

Yes you will if your above sea level. I had the red springs in my '03 RX-1 and saw better throttle response along with 200 more RPM without touching the clutches (this was @ 4700' elevation).

the highest i would ever be above sea level would be like 2000 feet but most of the time it will be like probably 1000. but i know they will make a difference if ya can get the slides to pull up quicker. also i see at royal distributing they have the kn filters, and the 165 main jets, carb springs, pre filters what else do i really need other than that to make up like an ecp kit. it all comes seperate instead of a package thing i guess.

Screw Royal man, just buy the real thing. Freddie is great to deal with and there are used ECP kits in the classifieds section all the time.
I am at sea level and the softer springs definitely allow for quicker throttle response.

Off their website:

Mikuni CV Carb Slide Springs for RX-1 Snowmobile
We have found some "easy" horsepower in these slide springs, specifically designed for three altitude ranges and inlets (stock or modified air box or carb filters) for the Yamaha RX-1 snowmobile (see table below). Improved throttle response and up to a 1000 RPM increase results from the use of these springs. A set of four springs come in a convenient carrying tube . For Vector applications, please call.
