so while repacking/cleaning my secondary bearing on the clutch side today I noticed a crack in the casting piece that the bearing is pressed into.. hairline that starts closest to the engine and then almost makes it to the outer edge of this cast piece. Anyone seen this before? How bad is this and can it be repaired? I will try to attach a pic. thanks

Its not good, I do believe its pressed in. You could cut it out and press in a new one or weld that one in place to the sled

With out having any sleds in front ot me to see just how thick that shoulder is, my first thought would be to but a hose clamp around it.
Obviously welding it up would be the best option, but I'd put clamp around it and just keep an eye on it.

Thanks...everyone I speak to has never seen this. Sled has 12k miles, but I take good care of the ol girl. Turns out its part of the frame and to replace its 1500 bucks. I have a welder that is going to touch this up. I woder what could cause this? I know vibration, but come on...its crazy

I suspect a shaft that is not true would cause this. When you have it apart to fix maybe check it for runout.

that is a possibility... but man the chances of one shaft coming out like this is slim and if more off the line not within tolerance than there must be more cases of it.
I am just real sour about this right now and I pray the welder can weld this and all my electronics will be safe during the process.

one more question out to you guys... what do you think of machining another collar to go on top of the current one and then weld it to the outside of the bulkhead? would this affect anything?

Some alloys of aluminum dont take well to welding, I think adding another collar or sleeve over it, pressing it on would be the best. HBushman is right on something caused it, If you do choose the welding route, disconnect battery and unplug ECM.

I ended up having a collar welded over it. Came out nice so she should be solid. Could pounding out bearing cause this? Dealer did this bearing for me a while ago and maybe did it ?no?

That is possible, I dont like pounding bearings out, however some instances you have to. Good to hear it turned out good. I would keep an eye on it thru the season. make sure it doesnt crack again. Happy riding.
