Today I measured the amp draw of my shield.
It spiked to almost an amp when first plugged
in and then dropped to less then half an amp.
I installed a 3 amp fuse in my adapter and
plugged my helmet into my cars cigar lighter
and drove for almost an hour with no problem.
My plan is to put a 4 amp fuse in the sled and
leave the 3 amp in the adapter the next time
I ride. I`ll post after I ride again.

For the slight extra wiring, just use the jump-start wires. I wired my '03's acc. plug to those, and also the heated shield wire, with a fuse very close to the jump-start wire.

Today I put about 20 miles on local. I installed a 4 amp fuse
in the sled and 3 amp in my adapter. So far no blown fuses.
Starting to wonder if Yamaha didn`t get a bad batch of fuses.

Wire it to the battery. I have never had a problem with that type of hook up!!
Onto the ACC circuit for 6000km so far, still no problems.

Rode 50 miles yesterday with 4 amp fuse in sled and 3 amp
in my adapter with no problems. Next ride will be Monday if the
snow stays with us. I`ll try a new 3 amp in the sled and see what happens.

Stock fuse is 3amps. Go up to 5 and you should be ok but remember to change the fuse in your outlet adopter as well. I did the same thing, went to Radio Shack, bought an adopter and made my own plug fot the shield. Got about 20 miles and the sled fuse blew. Replaced it with the spare 4amp and it blew again before I was back at the trailer. Upon later expection I found that the 4amp fuse was ok but the adopter had blowen it's 3amp fuse. Switched them both to a 5amps and no problems any more.
To bad it isn't that easy to fix the hand warmers!

Maybe I am missing the boat but what is this adapter that you are all talking of? Is that just the female RCA type jack?
Cant I simply just connect it to the headlight? I have done this on all my other sleds please tell me why i wouldnt be able to on this one?

Not sure about the RCA adapater thingy, but yes, you can just tie into the blue wire running to the headlight dimmer/bright switch.

Heated Shield Power Supply
I have been using heated shields since the early 90's. I have always wired directly to the battery, if I could.
On my 98 ZRs, if I recall correctly, there was a tap in the wiring harnesses for power take-off (batteryless EFI = No Battery.)
On the RX, I just soldered onto the Battery's jumper cables. Whereever you go for the power, don't forget to install a fuse as close to the tap as possible.

Yamaha's recomendation is to wire it to the blue wire on the bottom of the fuse box and you can use the hex bolt there for the ground.
