looking at a high mileage Vector GT that appears to have been well taken care of (13K). How many miles do you think these sleds will go? Should one consider such a sled?

i'm new to sledding and haven't even ridden mine yet. like anything else it depends on how it's been maintained, budget and the price. the engines hold up well but there's a lot that can fail or wear out in 13k. there have also been a number of changes over the years. you really need to post more info to get a more accurate idea.

it is a 06 and has been well maintained. appears to only really need bushings in front end. I would also do the jackshaft bearing and other bushings in rear.

Other than drive bearing replacement and track wear and normal track wear I can see these engines going 30-40 thousand miles trouble free the fact that they are only in there 7 th season of production means it will be at least 5 more seasons before we know for sure I do know a former member has recorded over 40 thousand miles on his RS Venture

how are the hand warmers on the 06 Vector?

being new i hate to sound as if i'm experienced but there ARE concerns. i haven't read all the info on the member with 40k on his sled but it's not like he hasn't maintained and repaired it.
the handwarmers are anemic, it will need front suspension bushings, they've had problems with the idler wheels, cam chain tensioners are a potential failure, check suspension components for cracks, steering bushings could be worn, the oil tanks have been known to crack, clutch side bearings need attention, exhaust doughnuts are a problem.
this is just off the top of my head and as mentioned i'm not even an old hand. i'm not badmouthing the vector or yamaha in general. heck i just brought my first sled ever and it's a 2010 vector. my brother brought a 06 with 1800 miles that was not abused and the front end bushings were shot as well as slop in the steering. i'm not someone that gets hung up on brands, they all have their problems and imho any sled with 13k on it needs to be checked out real close.
coming here to ask is a good first move, do some surfing around here and you'll find common problems as well as potential ones.

what is a fix to the hand warmer issue? I saw a post somewhere that someone had come up with a fix?

Check under general yamaha discussion for "warm hands" by rockmeister he has a elecronic module that boosts the output of he hand warmers I have one myself and it is unbeleivable and will probably never realize the full potential the grips get that hotminnewawa said:what is a fix to the hand warmer issue? How many miles
I wouldn't be scared of the miles, you can do more damage in 4000K hard miles than 13K of smooth trail riding. To get 13K on the guy either lives in snow country and rides almost daily or they ride mostly groomed trails, heck they wouldn't have time to get off and pound stumps. Check the things the others talked about. I don't think the hand warmers are an issue. We have an 05 and 06 with no issues. Son had an 06 Nytro and was always complaining about cold hands and frosting his glasses up until he finally put a decent windshield on it and that solved both issues.
Good Luck.

I have a 2006 Vector. The issues that I have had are; my driveshaft broke at 9000 miles while riding on a groomed trail at 20 miles per hour. My exhaust donuts were replaced at 8000 miles. I now have 10000 miles on it and they need replacing again. As for the hand warmers I just installed the hand guards and they helped out alot.

should i be thinking about replacing the chain? Also what belt do most people run?
jamesc

if you're referring to the cam chain that's not the issue it's the tensioner that has had failures. some sleds have gone many miles without problems...speaking for myself it's a gamble i wouldn't take

There should not be anything wrong with the chain. I run the yamaha belt not sure of number off hand. I would recommend replacing the jackshaft and drive shaft bearings while you are at it. The other problem I had was that my oil reservoir cracked like most of them do. I had it welded and installed rubbers behind the hold down bolts and it has been fine.
