I have been doing a pile of reading on here since I purchased my 08 Vector and to tell you the thruth, I am a little confused as far as how much oil my machine takes?

In the manual it states, 2.3Ltr's "without" a filter change and 2.5 with a filter change, but after doing a bunch of reading I have read where some say 3Ltr's and some say 3.2ltr's?

I know this question has probably been asked to death but can someone honestly tell me if I should be going by the manual or what others are saying it takes?

Excuse my english way of measuring (actually I'm too lazy to do the conversion right now)

But, with filter, I was just a few ounces over 3 QUARTS.

A quart is what.... something like .943 liters?? So, there is no way it's only 2.3 liters. It has to be 3.2 liters.

My dealer says... 3 litres... Pour two litres into the tank. One into the top of the engine where the black cap is. 3 Liters is equal to 3.2 quarts. If you do it the way the manual says to do it, you have a tendency to over-fill it and then oil dumps into the air box when you run the engine. Only 3 liters as long as you drain the tank, replace the oil filter and drain the plug next to the filter as there is quite a bit of oil in there. The plug next to the oil filter has a marker in the shape of a triangle.

As he said plus: Remove the black plug on top of the engine when draining oil, so there is no possibility of an air lock and some oil staying in the engine (happened at the dealers ). The plug/bolt next to the filter also has a copper washer. I always remove/clean the screen in the bottom of the tank, has a hose on it and don't lose or damage the oring.

Thanks for the replies

I just find it hard to believe Yamaha's own manual actually recommends less oil than what the machine actually takes.

I have done 1 oil/filter change to mine already, I drained the tank, the engine and filter then I carefully raised the front of sled up with a floor jack and a piece of wood and got all remaining oil out of the tank and engine (surprised how much more oil came out both spots when doing this!)

I then filled (as per manual) 1 1/2 ltr's in the tank (plus some in the filter/100mils?)
Fired sled up and ran for a minute, minute and a half with the oil light on the whole time, shut down, checked dip stick and added remaining litre after a few minutes of cool down time.
When checking the dipstick with it not screwed in, it shows it at approx the bottom half of the has marks or lower.
This tells me it needs another 1/2 a litre so I added it and brought it to the full mark or very close to it.

Just wondering why the manual would only state 2 1/2 ltr's when in fact it takes 3?

Thanks for the info everyone, from now on I am adding 2 in the tank and one down the head via the cap.

Another strange thing Yamaha did (on my 05 Vector) was to show F and E on the dipstick. I think it shouldn't show E as that means Empty and empty it isn't. It,s just low on oil.

Man, I dont know. The manual states that you are not supposed to add oil thru the top of the engine.. I would think that you could overfill the system if you add oil to the engine and the oil tank. G.B.

Just went over my manual again and "in my manual" it doesn't state to "not add oil" in through thru the top of the engine, it says just to add it to the tank?

Also upon further reading, which is mind boggling, it says "oil quantity" with filter and oil is 2.5L (2.64 US qt) but when you read below that, it states "total amount" 3.2 L (3.38 US qt) (2.82 Imp qt)
Just curious how they think this remaining 700 mils is going to make it in the engine??
