Ok, so with the help of a friend that does this sort of thing (fantastic job on my YZ42!) I'm porting my head. I've gotten it all apart but we're stuck trying to get the head past the exhust joint pipe and the service manual is no help.

Does anyone know the trick to getting this b*tch off without having to take the exhaust out entirely (thus having to drop the track).

Also, is it going to go by the cross member? It looks really really really close....

Thanks! (Probably should have asked these intelligent questions before I started eh? :) )

The head will come off in chassis but it is wicked tight! Some come of easier than others. It all depends on how good the factory set your clutch center to center and parallelism. On several, I had to grind the little traingle shaped gussets in each corner of the frame where the backside of the cylinder head will hit. Some I didn't have to grind. Removing the flex pipe and primary headers is easiest but if you care to struggle, you could have a few extra helpers with you...unbolt the exhaust at the manifold, and have your helpers pry the flex tubes and primary header tubes away from the manifold studs. To facilitate an easier reassembly, remove the studs when the head is off and replace them with socket head cap screws the same size. (allen bolts)

Why are you removing the cylinder?

Good luck!

I removed the bolts in the structure above the head , pryed up and put sockets in place to add clearance for getting the head off .

how do I get the flex pipe off? Basically I'm trying to avoid having to drop the track and remove the exhaust as much as possible. I've tried and tried and can't get those flex pipe headers out from between the head and the main exhaust. Thus I can't lift off the head :<

I'm not taking it all of the way down to the cylindars, only the head so that I can port/polish it.

Thanks guys!

remove seat, remove gas tank, there are 2 bolts that hold header piece in place, then you can slide it back for clearance. remove bolts that hold muffler down so the entire exhaust can move back. you dont have to drop susp.
