Before I left for vacation I had my dealer install an updated chaincase cover on my 2006 Apex GT. After hearing stories about how they fail. Note that my sled had 4500 miles with out any leaks before the cover was changed. On my last day of vacation I felt a rumble in the drive line. I got home and took the rt side cover to find that the upper chaincase cover seal leaked and my rotor was drenched in oil as was the engine oil tank. Sure enought I checked the chain case and it's bone dry.

Before I call my dealer..... Does the new chain case cover come with a new seal? Do you think they reused the old one? Should this be fixed free by the dealer?

You don't need to run a new seal with the new cover and the cover does not come with one. Some dealers probably do replace it, but in my opinion it is just the cover that needs to be changed.

All you get with the new cover is just the machined casting. Everything, including bearings, axle seals, reverse idler shaft, etc. has to be switched over to the new cover or replaced.

I've never heard or experienced a cover seal leak with the updated cover installed - ever.

Are you certain they got the updated cover installed?

I called him and he said it was the 2008 cover and they used a new seal. He also said he would fix it. Have not determined if the chain / gears are damaged. Sounded like he would fix it.

It should definitely get a new chain. Two reasons actually; first, if it did dry out, that chain could be close to failure without even being able to detect it. Second, I don't trust those chains to last much past 4500 miles anyways.
