Strange chaincase leak on Attak

Chaincase update!

HOWEVER - I have been careful not to exceed 90 mph for more than 1/4 mile or so. Just not worth ruining a trip where you could be 400 miles from the truck!

The dealer used the original gasket and put a layer of silicone in the groove.

I am more concerned about the guys who have lost oil with no visible leaks.

I have only 1-2 more rides, and I plan to change the oil to synthetic at the end of the season.

Thanks for the update GKW! Yesterday I spoke with another dealer, this one in the U.P., who also has had sleds come in with the mysterious leak...he had no 100% explanation either! I am headed out for my last ride of the season next weekend. Where I'm going, extended 90+ MPH pulls are not easily done. Hopefully the chaincase will be a non-issue.

I'm curious as to everyone's opinion of synthetic lube and if that would only make the problem worse???

Again, it's time for Yamaha to start supplying their dealers with proper information so that this is not a problem next year as well.

Well, for the first time in a long time I have something positive to report. I picked my sled up Thursday evening after the entire chain case was replaced and headed north. We rode 40 miles Thursday night, then did 250 miles from Aurora Wi to Gwinn Mi and back Friday, then did a 50 mile loop Saturday morning. Sled ran great all weekend and not one problem, second ride this year without any issues!!!! Maybe the last ride of the year, the sun was reallly hot and taking it's toll on the trails Saturday. I will watch the chain case, but i'm not going to change the way I ride. If I have the trail or lake etc... I will hold it WOT for however long. Sled should be able to take it.

Well I am the latest to have a chain go. Droped it off at the dealer late Saturday so will probably hear Monday whats all involved. Didn't see or feel any lube outside of the chaincase. Could it be blowing out the rear seal? Not to upset yet, just switched to Yamaha from Cat so I am use to stuff breaking. Was lucky to have friends driving by so they droped off a backup sled and put mine on the trailer. Down only about an hour. Would not have been happy if stranded 200 miles from home. Tough to say if I have good luck or bad luck!

100 % synthetic ATF oil would fix the foaming if that is what is causing the oil leak. Almost any oil will work in a chain case even synthetic light motor oil would work.

Held my sled to the bar this weekend, numerous times. Average distances 2 to 4 miles. For real. On snow packed lake.
No problems here.

On my vecter er it came from the factory with oil up to the standerd arrows even though it has reverse. My dealer told me that they all come in this way. When I started riding this year the extra oil came out through the upper chain case bearing. Its now between the reverse arrows but at high speed runs I still get a little coming through the bearing. I now wonder when the bearing failure will occure since the grease was washed out by the oil.

The bearings in the chaincase are lubricated by the OIL, not grease. That oil splashes around in there and provides a continuous lubrication. Aside from inside the engine, the chaincase bearings are the best lubricated bearings on the sled and (if you always have clean oil in there) the least likely to fail.

One thing though... if you have oil coming out the seal behind the bearing, then you have a bad seal. Replace it.

Changed to Amsoil synthetic (chain case and crank case) at 700 miles. Last weekend put on 300 miles and about half of those miles were at speeds in excess of 75 mph. No problems and the sled did no use any oil.

There is a problem with the chaincase pressurizing causing the lower seal to leak out the chaincase fluid. I was with an attak which had this problem. There is an unofficial fix for the ones that have not leaked. Drill a 3/16 hole down the side of the dipstick from top of the rubber through to the bottom. This prevents pressure in the case which saves the seal. I am doing my attak now so i don't have this problem. Will post again after some high speed runs down the lakes.
