I went to the u.p. this weekend to try out all my new mods on my xtx. The main one I was looking forward to was the sdr undertunnel exhaust. However it seemed to ice up just as bad as before with the stock exhaust. I also found that with the more the ice built the in helmet drone became louder and louder. I had to buy ear plugs to make it through the trip. The exhaust sounds awesome going by, kind of like a formula one race car. I removed my tunnel protectors and moved the brake light to the very end of the tunnel. Is anybody else with the sdr exhaust seeing icing problems too? The picture is after I put the sled in the trailer with a heater to remove the ice. The picture is probably about 45 mins. Of riding on lake gogebic. It was worse the night before when we rode from lake gogebic to copper harbor and back. I would just like to know what others are seeing with the exhaust..

* it won't let me upload a picture on my EVO (FILE TO BIG) so I have to wait til I get home *

yea mine iced up real bad too. Was kindve dissapointed actually when i saw it happened, was hoping i wouldnt have to deal with it anymore. I think if you spray the tunnel or wax the rear part the snow may slide off more. Im in the process of putting a coat of wax back there to see if it will get better. Ya that buzz noise was super annoying and i didnt have my ipod so i was stuck with it. I think Painting the tunnel like SDR did on his xtx was a major factor as to why the ice never formed on his. Im powdercoating my tunnel this summer so im hoping it will help....and look cool....... Exhaust does sound effin sweet tho

Thats very strange, in all of my testing we found a major decrease in icing. My inner tunnel was not painted, still raw aluminum. I do find conditions to play a big role in icing, though I never let the slush freeze on mine, it would normally build up slightly around the upper idlers, a light tap with my boot would take care of the problem. I guess a coat of PAM or anti icing spray might help.

Thanks 09nytrortx... I spent more than I wanted this year in hopes for a good winter... I tried several times to extract the ice with a butter knife and by hand, it was impossible, it was solid ice. We had another nytro xtx in the group that was a stock 2011 and he had hardly any ice at all, and he was riding the same conditions.. I have some ideas with heat tape and silicone, but I still couldn't believe it did that... I also believe that the noise is the sheet metal rattling against the tunnel or the exhaust rattling against the sheet metal block off plate...

I'd say that if the conditions for making tunnel ice are perfect...
Once it gets going heavy there is no stopping it.
I think those perfect conditions have happened to us all at once time or another with various setups.

If your getting a rattle against the tunnel, you may need to bend the brackets for the header down slightly, loosen the header bracket bolts and apply some pressure to the header, keep bending them down till you have some space between the muffler and the tunnel.

Ya I know conditions have to be right but Friday the 20 the temps were -10 to -2 for the high with lite lake effect. One would believe that at that temperature it wouldn't ice like that. We will see that was the first ride this season so hopefully I get out a couple more times to test.

I think it has to do with the hot gases coming out under the tunnel, My home made undertunnel is working good for ice except for the last 8 " or so of tunnel I am going to extend the tip I have now to make it longer and try to get it outta the tunnel farther to see the results.

I had to do this. was rattling just a little bit, not a huge deal tho. Thought ur whole tunnel was painted, my bad.

Ya SDR I ended up bending the tabs a little and also added more rubber spacers to lower the exhaust more from the tunnel. i think my clamp might be to close to the block off plate and the block off plate might need more rivets on the inside. my buddy said it reminded him of an ice dam on a house where you have the hot ehaust warmming the under side of the tunnel but the outer or top part of the tunnel is still cold, thus icing up instantly.

I also thought of extending the tail pipe to the end of the tunnel, so if any icing was to form it would only be on the sides.

I believe i saw your sled @ Krupps gas station on Friday? Its a sharp looking setup you have there.

Ya that would be me.. Krupp's has some good bakery goods.. I had their Pasties which was pretty good... This is a pic of my nytro...

I too made my own under tunnel exhaust in hopes of eliminating the icing concern you guys talk about. I have never riddien my sled as I bought it in the off season. I used a Stock Harley muffler and vector header. I have it pointed straight towards the rear of the sled and attached at 4 points hoping it will act like a heat sink and warm the tunnel enough to prevent the icing. I guess I will find out next week when we head to Maine
