rode the rs rage for the 1st time yesterday, and then got back on the viper for the 1st time since last spring....that engine braking, top heaviness and weight, are gonna take some getting used to....
the viper felt like a little 340 after getting off the rage.
really glad I decided to rebuild the viper and keep it around for a few more years.

on the positive side, the rage DOES have a better suspension, as far as bump absorbtion.

Its all in set up. The Rage has a Deeper Keel Ski and that will give you heavy steering. Once you have that Rage set properly you will dump that Viper! Just my 2 cents!

you wouldn't have a snowballs chance in hell of keeping up with a viper in the woods, no matter what your set up is.....just MY .02
4strokes are cool in some respects and they don't stink as bad, but these old vipers (SRX's) are gonna become very valuable to us Yammie loyalists....(and many others)....as the years role on...this stuff is, has been, and WILL be, legandary, as in Yammies past...The last of a generation and all that stuff,....the 4strokers may be there too,....someday.

arctic cat has an anti-engine braking system on the Jag...i think....I don't know how much it helps, but give them a big thumbs up for the effort.
maybe yammie could give it a try.
after putting on 20 miles tonight on the trails its feels like the e-braking plants the skis really well if you leave off the flipper a the right time, but as soon as you touch the throttle you lose yur bite.

You should get used to modulating the throttle to control the engine braking.

Many of us prefer it now we are used to it. Saves on brakes too.

You can reduce it some by raising your idle rev's.

the idle revs seem low, like 1000 rpm, I'll give it a try.
My viper is getting its second set of brakes after 9200 miles on the original factory set....I don't think its an issue.
"get used to it" is a phrase I don't take to real fast...this could be a problem...Thinking about investing in as many vipers i can find to sell back to the current 4 stroke crowd after the shine wheres off of there new investments.

You must have one helluva viper!!!

I found that the vector (moreso the Nytro) handled almost exactly like the viper...flat with a hint of inside ski lift. The only downside when comparing the two head to head has been the topend...The viper is a great sled but come on. Its had its day and with equal riders the vector is easier to ride faster on the trail (we do it every weekend).

If you "get used to" the engine braking it actually helps you run smoother.

I've run with alot of guys who thought they could run away from me in the woods etc ..2003-600 HO Rev ski-doo, 650 Polaris xlt, 1998 700 srx, 2001-700 mxz piped and clutched..they were keeping with me for the most part..kinda sometimes in the twisties...lost them sometimes and they went off the trail and almost were killed>>LOL really!. But when we hit any straights with 1-2'+ stutter bumps they were not hanging at all and I was cruising at 85+. So OVERALL the Rage when properly set up is a better machine and when running all day with 2-smokes they burned $40-50 aday more than me between gas and oil..that adds up to alot when doing a cross country trip..and oh yeah when doing a cross country trip I was alot less soar than them after 250-300 miles>>>just my 2 cents.

hey...all i'm sayin' is same rider riding 1 rage and then 1 viper,.. same field, same owner, same time, same attitude...(given 'er),back to back several runs....and i'm just not seein' these new yammies coming close to the 2 strokes in handling turns...BUT, I won't write it off till the season is over
By the way ,I'm just trying to figure this sled out for the wife to ride....she already has a bit of negative attitude,so i want to help her along in getting accustomed to this sled
she is currently on v max dlx. 700, and as she puts it she "likes the way it coasts"

I use the engine breaking to my advantage... I never let off the throttle threw the corners..

Add a 13mm swaybar from Pioneerperformance and the handling will be 100% better..

Its hard to compete in the handling department.. but in the rough stuff the viper is a BRICK compared to the rage and its smooth riding 136

I had a viper.. and will never own one again..

To reduce engine braking effect, think of the throttle as the trigger of your variable speed drill, roll it on, roll it off, reduce thumb pressure in turns and not just drop it. there's no need to 'coast'. You said you don't like 'to get used to it' , but you and your wife will, and will like it. Riding 4st then 2st back to back it is quite noticable, but ride the 4st only for a couple of rides and you'll see the e-braking is no big deal. Good Luck

heck my 2strokes do the brakeing thing. i think it has to do with track tension as i run mine to spec.

do you guys get thumb fatigued , cause even with the few short trips I rode the rage I could feel it....and I NEVER feel it on the viper...even after a 200 mile day......

I agree with welt, the engine braking is different than traditional sleds but once you are used to it you can actaully get through the corners faster i believe. I wouldn't want it removed or reduced. Just my .02 cents
