I'm on the fence to change or not...driveshaft

I don't run studs...neither did the '05 RX1 and it snaped at 13.000kms, I don't know if its me missing the post's but their doesn't seem to be much breaking anymore on the newer models, was it a '05 problem?

I was wondering the same question. The 05's and 06's seemed to have more failures. Have there been any changes to these shafts over the years? Part number has been the same. I'm actually running an 03 RX shaft in my Apex because I had already installed extroverts on it. But it's got about 20,000 km's, and I'm gonna change it this fall. It almost sounds like the Micro-Belmont shaft, at about the same cost as OEM, might be the way to go since it's made of stainless.

Yep it sems to be a weak spot, some are going the MICRO BELMONT route but we Canucks have to fork out near $400 or so to get 1, so I'd rather pay less and change it every 10.000kms, you should also check all your bearings, chain, tightner and change top & lower oil seals at the same time.

If your the least mechanicaly handy with some patients you'll be alright...take pics with a DIGITAL camera as your taking it apart so if your not sure of some details you can refer to your pics...

Oh yeah 1 last thing, BEER! :drink: is only after your done without any spare parts. ;)!

I noticed that the '05 had a different colour material and the new ones are silverish in colour, most seem to break right next to chaincase while some others break dead centre...my buddy's '05 last year broke at 13.000kms unstudded shorty, he did notice a unusual vibration at his feet a few rides prior to breaking, so I think that this could be a good indication of a weak/faulty driveshaft waiting to break...once it does break you have NO BRAKES! :o|

Iam also going to change mine out and install extrovert drivers and a cobra track to also going to put in 162 studs down the middle. Replacing the speedo side bearing to. I have 6000 plus miles.
Going to sell my old track to help with the cost.

The shaft is still the same lengt on the 2009 sleds even tho the 2009 drift shaft is different.

2003-2008 RX-1/Warrior/Apex/Attak
part#: 8FA-47511-00-00

2009 Apex/Attak
Part#: 8HF-47511-00-00

If you take a closer look at the partslist, part# 26 (bearing) and 27 (c-clip) mounts to the chaincase cover. Part# 80 has been redesigned to take the bolt holding the sprockets to the shaft, and it will now fit into the inner race of the chaincase cover bearing. Load from the chain is now spread to both sides of the driven sprockets, a result of that would be longer bearing life.

rxrider,
Please, wondering about a couple of things? Is the '09 shaft heavier than the earlier ones? Will the '10 extro's work using it? Can it be adapted to use in the 08 and older sleds?

I have no info on dimensions of the shaft, I do not have access to the Technical Update Books online. I will have to visit my dealer and have a look in their books, upgrades are allways described in the Technical Update.

I searched thru the partlists and compared model year 2008 and 2009. This is what I found.

Part#: 8FP-47541-10-00 - Chaincase, Apex, Model year 2008 and 2009
No changes from 08 to 09.

Part#: 93306-20589-00 - Bearing Speedo side of driveshaft.
No changes from 08 to 09.

Drive Sprockets 2008 Apex
8BW-47531-00-00 - WHEEL, SPROCKET 1
8BW-47532-10-00 - WHEEL, SPROCKET 2

Drive Sprockets 2009 Apex
8BW-47531-10-00 - WHEEL, SPROCKET 1
8BW-47532-20-00 - WHEEL, SPROCKET 2

There's a difference between the model#s but changing the 3rd # only mean that the part have been upgraded, it's not a new part as I read the part#s. To be absolutely sure about the dimensions of the drive shaft I have to visit my dealer and check.

If I don't post the data with a week please PM me, I may forget about it LOL. Me silicone brain hahaha :-)

I have 10,700 miles on my 06 Attak and now you guys have me worried!! I already went through the sled in spring. Never been studded. Any one else with high miles and no failures??
