I bought titanium and some aluminum bolts last year from www.racebolts.com but I forgot the size and they werent shoulder.

Here is what you need to do.
Take the stock bolt to a hardware store that has a big fastener section (Ace?)

Buy the stainless hex bolt, get the stainless washer/fender washer to get to the large head size. Use nylon spacers to make the shoulder.

I agree the stock bolts are a pain in the arse!

But shoulder bolts would probably rust, unless you could find them in stainless metric.
 
Body panel screw removal

The trick for getting these STUBBORN fasteners out is to grind off about 1/16 th to 1/8 th of an inch off of the tip of a #2 phillips bit (use the "drywall" style tip in a cordless drill). Shop at your hardware store for bits and only buy the one(s) that fit the closest and modify those. You know it fits right (after grinding the tip) when the bit no longer bottoms out in the screw and will not "wobble" around the head of the screw. Grinding off the tip allows the 4 flats of the phillips bit to fully engage the 4 sockets of the phillips head.

Using the modified bit you can sometimes get old partially stripped out screws to work again, but it will end stripping out new ones.

These are assembled by humans in Japan. There is no secret, they do not have "black helicopter tools". Ya gotta ask though, how do they get these %^&*%$ things so tight? Answer = A tool that fits.

All you need to use is a # 3 phillips That's what the screws are made for you will not have any problems. Works GREAT!
 
Well, I have 7 different #3 phillips screwdrivers and bits in my box and some fit better than others.....

The modified #2 bit seats the best against the flats, by far!

I believe these are posi-drive type fasteners? If you use a #2 phillips, you are setting yourself up for trouble.

I've consistently used, with great success, my Craftsman #3 phillips. The only complaint I have about the arrangement, is sometimes (over-time) the panels don't readily line-up with the threads. This is a real PITA when your hunched down on a cold garage floor. The other complaint is those stupid pegs on the inside of the panels that never seem to lock in-place.

I would really like to convert the panels to a zeus type fastener - anyone done this yet?
 
I use a socket style #3 Philly. The socket/ratchet combo really makes life easy...you have lots of leaverage and you can keep good pressure down on the screw so it doesn't skip (not that the #3 would..it seems to lock right in there). I like the look of the screws best but it sure is alot easier getting the panels of an Apex....

I guess this does nothing to answer your actual question lol. I don't know where to get bolts (other then Yamaha) but at least now you know how not to wreck the new ones lol.
 
I too have had 100% success with #3 phillips Craftsman screwdrivers and bits. A few of my other brand #3's are a bit to fat to fully engage, but the Craftsmans fit like a glove. I tried a #2 on the first one and started to strip one out before I recognized this must actually a #3 screw.

I also agree with the suggestion of putting the screwdriver bit into a ratchet rather than using a normal screwdriver...especially for the extra stubborn ones. The extra leverage makes them pop loose real easily.
 
Golly, I did not mean to start a mini war here.....

I too have a Craftsman #3 in my box, and it fits BETTER than an unmodified #2. The Modified #2 really does fit perfectly, compare the two and there will be no question.

I also have a bunch of #3 bits that do not fit well at all.

I know that if I am faced with a number of these to take out I am going to grab my MODIFIED #2 and a cordless drill in low range. I will lean into them with the M#2 that does not wobble -at all- in the flats and it will be short and successful work.

In the end though, whatever works for ya!
 
i was removing the panel on the chaincase side and had to use a center punch and a hammer to get two of those phillips headed bastards out of there homes....why cant yamaha use allen heads on stuff like that...they did for the exhaust covers....or somethin besides phillips. i will try grinding off a qtr of an inch off a #2 phillips and see how that works...but i think i will end up headin to a parts store and gettin some allen headed bolts that fit, instead of messing with phillps
