The previous owner hacked out the tunnel protectors so I need to install new ones since I studded my track. It doesn't look like a fun job but I alread have teh skid out so now is the time to do it. My question is this: Will I need to remove the fuel tank to install the rivets on the front end of the tunnel protectors?

You dont need Tunnel protecters i got 114 with 4,000 miles. No problems

Previous owner did. Helps reduce ice build up.

Powder coated.

Anyone have any idea what these tunnle protectors are protecting if removing them doesn't damage the tunnel with a picked track? Is removing the tunnel protectors done a lot out there?

I looked at mine the other day and I can see how they would contribute to ice build up. On the other hand, IMO there must be circumstances under which the engineers thought these would be necessary.

I'd say they're there to protect your exhaust and header. I have mine in and my track is a little on the loose side and they managed to scratch my muffler. No big damage but good thing they were there. I just installed the system too...

they are not to protect the tunnel, they are there to protect your exhaust and front cooler... ive got a bunch of marks on my protectors from the 114 studs I had on my xtx, if they wernt there it would of most likely been either the cooler or the exhaust...

Thats where there is the difference in xtx and shortie i run my track loose with no probs.

Well the reason I'm thinking it did that is because I have an old worn down 1 inch track with 1.375 studs in it. So before the protectors did their job, the studs hit. If I would have been running a 1.25 track I'm sure it wouldn't have hit with those studs. And my suspension was at the softest! Bad idea! Lol

Oh yeah, I will need to remove the fuel tank then the heat shield, then the headers , another heat shield and so on.....I've decided I would rivet the middle and back end of the tunnel protectors and then spot weld the protector to the tunnel up front. This will be so much easier. Anyone ever done this or see a problem with this?
