Notice the new Nitro is 130hp's with NO gear redution.

Since the Apex has a gear redution to bring the power down from 11,000 RPM's to 8,000 RPM, and we all know that gears rob power.

So is the engine 150hp's and the clutch say 130hps????

Or is the motor 180hp's like the R1 and the clutch at 150hp's? :4STroke:

No the motor truely makes 150hp.

The sad thing is it can make more, Yamaha has it detuned

so whats the power at the clutch??? 130??? same as the Nitro???

Power is always measured at the clutch shaft. It is the same HP as at the crank (150) the gear reduction acts as a torque multiplier, it does not affect the HP.

I wonder what really is different between the sled motor and the bike motor, and what we can do to even the odds a little. You would think we could have a 185hp. motor without having to do all these little aftermarket mods?!!!

I tought maybe it was a 185hp motor and after the gear reduction voila your at 150hp

The Bike spins at 12500 rpms. I think they need to spin these sleds up that high to. Then you'd start to see some power. There is nothing wrong with spinning a clutch at 9200 to 9300 rpms. Right now they spin 8500

I heard the limits to clutch technowlogy was 8500Rpms?

the bike has 2 small contact patchs on the pavement...the rest is wind resitance....so that motor is not really working hard...even when you do get on the gas you are doing close to 180+mph in a matter of seconds .....the sleds however have alot of drag, deep snow,slush,etc....the contact patch are much greater...2 skies, the track...the motor works alot harder......if you had 185hp I don`t think the motor would hold together to long.......this only a theory.

I think the new bike motors have a four vlave head design not five like the Apex. Maybe they're waitin for their inventory of the five valvers to expire then we get the hp jump... just dreaming. Ever wonder how profitable the snowmobile business can be?? Im shocked this put as much $$ into R&d as they do.

So how does it work when the new nitro has over 1050cc motor that only produces 130hp, and the apex is 998cc and produces 150hp?

Nytro motor is a triple that spins at 8500 rpm. Apex is a 4cyl that spins at 10,700 rpm.

two motors with similar displacement you need more rpm's to make more power. That's why the Apex has more power it spins 2000 rpm's higher.

Seems the sled engines are always a few years back from the ones in the bikes. The 5 valve yamaha has been around since 85 or 86. They now have a new 4 valve design. Back in the day before titanum, 5 valves were lighter , so the rev'ed higher but with the newer light weight alloys out there you can make more power and still have light valves with the 4 valve design.I race a 03 R1 and yes it does spin at 12000 rpm but even at race pace it is not up there all the time. In the infield we run around 7 to 8000 rpm. Sled motors on average run higher and so I believe they detune them to run less rpm thus maxing out engine life. Clutch on a sled motor is the crank while on a bike you can also measure HP from the rear wheel. EG. The newer R1's quote 185 HP at the Crank but see about 158 hp at the rear wheel.
