Is there any early April riding allowed

It's "legal" here on public land. Problems are they quit grooming as of April 1 and most private land that has gates are closed as of that date. We ran into that problem last year when we had the 3 feet of snow during the second week of April.

You can try north of Seney/McMillan/Newberry.....most of all those trails run over public lands, and the only gate I am aware of is on the trail that leads out of Newberry.

You can trailer 4 miles out of town, and bypass that easily.

Plus, you have hundreds of miles of two-tracks to explore.

well i know up in the UP just south of houghton you can ride mid april on a bad year without touching roads or bare pavement and have a pile of snow to play in

That is quite correct. The only thing I would say to that is that some of the county roads used to suppliment the trails are plowed. This is ok in the winter when there is constant snow to replenish what is plowed off, but now you'll be greeted with either bare pavment, or mud/gravel. Seasonal county roads should still be ok. If you pick your ride with some care, there's still outstanding snow out there!

might want to contact someone up there before you head out on a family trip, just in case the trails arent groomed. it might not be bad if its you and your buddies but the wife and kids might not appreciate "yoopers" or 2 foot whoops all day long

Here is the report for the western U.P. (
http://trailreport.com/cgi-bin/snowmobi ... =westernup

Trail Report: ONE MORE TIME, TIME JUST GOT EXTENDED ONE MORE WEEK. The state has extended grooming until April 6th due to the exceptional snow coverage on the trails. With few exceptions, we're hearing really good reports from riders.
So, groomers out on selected trails...many trails solid, flat and in really good shape.
Be aware you'll run into some icy areas and you're likely to run into a few wet places-ride accordingly...and as always slow down on corners. The season has been extended for another week, so if you do want that ONE MORE TIME...it's now.
As always, check with your lodging facility on ice depth and conditions before venturing out on any Lake, especially now.
Come on up-have fun-be safe!

HEY!! I resemble that remark!! ;):D

Anyway, looks like there should still be some good snow here until April 6th though it may be a little wet in places (what with the highs in the 40s and all.)

The season might be extended but that doesn't mean that the groomers are going to clean up the mess from this storm. I tried to ride up to a friends house 30 mi. from here.......after 1 1/2 hrs. and climbing over around and even through about 100 downed trees, I gave up with a whole 10.1 miles on the odometer. The riding, what little there was, was good.......but just not worth the effort. If I'd had another body with me, I might have kept going.......

If you trailer north of Newberry, I recommend going to 8-mile corner (as we call it). You go 4 miles north out of Newberry on M-123, and then turn left onto H37 - County 407 for another 4 miles (hence 8 mile corner). Then right after the long bend, you turn left onto County 424 - 455. Go west until that road bends and park in a plowed area. The trail is right there on your left, as well as a number of unplowed roads and other forest roads in the area. An extra 10 minutes by truck, saves a ton of trouble getting closer to town or even to 4-mile corner.

I was in Seney yesterday and Seney to the bear trap was excellent. Even north to Grand Marais the groomer was out. I don't know about newberry. Still alot of snow in the woods. Here's a pic from Wednesday just north of Seney.
