The jackshaft bearing does not see the elements like the drive axle bearing but should be inspected by prying off the oil seal and ensuring there's sufficient grease and if not, re-pack.
As for the drive axle bearing, it is exposed to the elements and should have its oil seal removed and bearing inspected yearly as if that bearing goes, it can also take out your speedo sensor. As for when to replace based off miles/kilometers, it's more of removing and cleaning out the grease so as to be able to spin the bearing freely to see if it catches or if there's wobble and if not, re-pack.
I won the Greaser at our TY Reunion Ride this year and it's basically a plate with a grease zerk where you remove the bearing's outer oil seal and bolt up this plate against the bearing. Then you just use the grease zerk yearly to add grease. I like the ease of maintenance it provides but does not eliminate the need to do as I stated above to ensure the bearing itself is still good. Hope this helps.

To remove the oil seal, although I have used the 'pick' variant of these tools, I find these angled spades to be the best for removing the seal without damaging it (ie. bend/warp seal):
Then just find a needle point grease tip like this and use to stick down into the bearings/race to repack bearing with grease:

my 2011 apex xtx had the speedo bearing fail at 11500 mi with annual repacking. it just cut the inner race in 1/2. now i replace it every 2nd season when i get a replacement that only has the metal seals as at the end of the 2nd season it is toast for the milage i run. with the rubber seals i pull the seal and repack it every year. i repack the jackshaft bearing every year on the sleds that get the most milage.
when the speedo brg failed on the 11, i did the jackshaft bearing and all the chain case bearings with a new chain for my peice of mind as it was run for a bunch of mi with it bad before i found out about it in the off season. sled it sitting at close to 25000 mi now and still puts in a good day. going to have to pull the one on the 16 and check it as it has close to 8000 mi on it atm.
