Jackshaft Bearing: How do I check it?

CENA maybe this will help. The jackshaft is the shaft with the brake disk on it. The drive shaft is in the tunnel with the cogs that drive the track.

There are two "jackshaft" bearings and two "driveshaft" bearings.

There is a jackshaft and drive shaft bearing in the chaincase. These "chaincase" bearings are serviced with regular chaincase oil changes. Nothing to grease there.

The 2nd pair of bearings is on the clutch side that you access by removing the secondary clutch. (easy to do, one bolt no special tools). The upper (jack shaft) seal is easy to see after the clutch is off. the lower (drive shaft) bearing is behind a cover and the speedo pick up.

Carefully pry the seals off and clean and re grease. and you'll be good to go.

for me the hardest part of the job is getting the belt off. then I have a hard time seeing up close to pry the bearing seals off with a tiny screwdriver..

Thanks alot everyone! Excellent information! I will check the clutch side, the chaincase side was checked and greased this winter. Mechanic said the bearings were in great shape. 2,200 on the sled.

Regarding the removal of the bearing seals? Do the seals seem to tolerate the prying out process without encountering any damage? How do they seem to hold up? I agree this would be the better alternative than complete removal. On the speedo/drive shaft side, once you pull the plate and speed sensor off, can you easily access the bearing seals?

Another question: Does the chain case provide enough lubricant for the lower drive shaft bearing?

What is the best tool of choice for seal removal?

Thanks and great post!

What is the best grease for packing the bearings? Lithium? Do you just pack it in by hand? Carb cleaner or Brake cleaner priot to repacking?

:jump:

I bought some Mobil 1 synthetic for mine when I regrease them.

I think most clean them out with some sort of grease solvent (WD-40?) then just repack them with your fingers.

Thought a few pics might be helpful. Read these in reverse. Click on pic to enlarge and see better.

I think my jackshaft bearing went out last night. Bad grinding coming from around the secondary clutch area. Thought I blew a belt until I stopped and checked the belt. The belt is fine but the grinding and non meshing of gear sounds makes me think it's the jackshaft bearing. How hard of a repair is this???

For some reason my computer won't display all the pictures at the end of this article does anyone else have this problem??? Going to try and tackle the repair this weekend and it would be nice to have this article as a guide along with the service manual.
