Hi guys

Ive read on here that the jackshaft bearings should be replaced at roughly 3000 mi. on an rx1 mountain.

I was wondering why they need to be replaced so early and do I need to take the entire chaincase off to remove the bearing on this side?

Also how long can I expect for this job to take for a first timer. Im an electrician by trade so i should be able to figure it out but I have worked on polaris my whole life and was curious if this is really any differenet on a rx1. It doesnt seem like it but im not sure

Pop off the seal and see how it looks, and grease it. That bearing usually lasts pretty good because it doesn't get wet.

At the very end of last year I blew the entire works of bearings on the jack shaft, gear box, and the drivers. She had about 7300 km's on her at the time.

WOW! thats a bummer at such low km's, I've got 10.000kms on OEM'S and re-packed my speedo and jackshaft this fall...how often do you grease them and change your oil in the chaincase?

Well I bought the sled last year via nlclassifieds.ca so it was my first year having m own sled. I don't know anything at all about mechanics, I'm only 17, but as far as I figured I didn't think bearings would go so quick. When it all happened I convinced Dad to let me try and fix it myself as I love picking at things and learning how it all works, especially when it's mine. Anyways I had the brakes off, reverse unhooked, and the cover off and I left it alone then until Dadcame out to help taking out the gears because I didn't have a clue where to start. When I came home from school one day he had one of the guys who works for him out there and had everything picked apart. They had parts and gears everywhere so I just thought to myself "this isn't ending wel" and I was right. We replaced all the bearings and two rides later the entire works blew to pieces again. I was on my way back from a dcent ride and every five km's a bearing would pop and squeal for a bit. When I crossed the road to the house the gears started grinding so I said that's it them idiots got my gear box @%!$*#. We sent it to the Yammie shop that time and turns out Dad's employee put one of the gears in backwards. Every single bearing we raplaced was gone again. Lucky though because we found out she didn't have the right altitude gearing so we got that fixed as well. The bearing on the jack shaft on the clutch side blew to pieces the first time. Casings out wraped around stuff and bearings everywhere, I thought the motor was gone because of the sounds, scared me to death. That bearing is tapered and the little spacer that goes in under it on the shaft is usually tapered in a smooth way. When we took it off there was three deep steps wore into it. It was a mess.

If it isn't bad I wouldn't replace it, just grease it. Yamaha actually put out a technical bulletin about those bearings on all sleds. They say to use a needle and grease them yearly. That will help get them to last longer.

Just a note....if you have to take somthing apart like the chaincase, take a few pics as you dissassemble it, especially things that can be confusing. It really helps a lot and easy to do, takes only a minute of your time.

jackshaft replacment

My hands are still dirty, Just finished a jack bearing change. The tec section under track removal, helped alot. I did the jack bearing behind the secondary. (need a piece of 2" rigid 8" long to reinstall it sparky.) There are 2 bearings on the top gear side not one, Did both of them & got the 2 seals $8 each, didnt get the O rings on the shaft. (I am regreating that now.) If you havent did any bearings at all, You should do your track drive at the same time & be good for a couple more thousand. all the time is takeing off the brakes, gear case. The bearing are EZ. getting to them sucks. I 13 K on my warrior. 4-5 k one of them WILL go. Alot cheeper to fix in your garagre, on you time. About $200 for all of it. 8hrs.

What kind of needle to grease the bearings?

On a side bar, just because the chaincase bearings are immersed in oil doesn't really mean they will last forever. I blew my lower chaincase bearing to pieces where I could barely drive it any further. Thank God I was about one km from the truck.

I will do the needle thing if someone can explain on how.

The needle is like one of those that you would use to blow up a basket ball except it has a grease nipple on the other end of it, so you plug the nipple into the grease gun and then pump the grease in around the bearing. First you need to take off the secondary and C clip and the bearing seal and clean the bearing out with cleaner, I was told to use gas, but I think brake cleaner works. The bearing behind the speedo gear needs to be done as well, take off the gear, the plate around it and the seal then clean and pump the grease in around it. The needle attachment helps to get the grease in around each individual bearing a lot better than just rubbing it in with your fingers. Hope this helps.
