The problem is your comparing a lighter 2 smoke, low approach angle sled to the XTX. I'm not saying it has to have a 1.5" maybe the get with Camo and make a specific 1.325 or something. I just think it seems like they geared it more for the trail riders. So when a bunch of people are on here saying, it's not as good off trail as there Crossfire or Switchback, we'll know why. Sure we will like it better than the LTX, but I'm talking about getting people to make the switch from other brands. I'm sure the trail guys would have no issue changing the track if desired. Heck all the long track guys do it now!
In that case it's the approach angle that needs to be addressed, and not the lug height.
My SKS was 525lbs dry and it was amazing in the snow, and I mean the deep snow in western NFLD.
A crossover sled has to be good on the trails. If you don't want a trail sled buy the MTX.

I'm really on the fence on the lug height! On my ZR I have a 1.25 ice ripper and she did pretty good off trail. Just had to keep on the gas.
I thinking that with a 144 track, thats a pretty good size footprint. Figger if I keep the gas to her she should be able to dig through most of the powder. But if thats not gonna work out, I'd rather upgrade the track now before I pick her up.
Newfiebullet, what part of the west coast are you from?

Stephenville. So if you ride south of Corner Brook at all I'm vert familiar with places you go. I've ridden out to Marble a few times too, and out to Hughes Brook. Mostly used to spend my time in Cold Brook and Gallants though.RowdyRoddy said:I'm really on the fence on the lug height! On my ZR I have a 1.25 ice ripper and she did pretty good off trail. What is the difference in approach angle on the xtx compared to the short track? I think most people know the xtx isn't a perfect crossover but I think it is a good starting point. The more off trail you do it just needs a few more mods.SledFreak said:Yamaha's just sink in soft snow.. I believe it's because of the approach angle and it just wants to dig. They really need to work in this area for the cross-over sleds.

Also on this side of the pond the press is not very kind to the XTX. According to the swedish magazine "SnowRider", the XTX is outperformed by every other crossover sled as soon as you leave the trail (they use words like "spanked by Renegade 4-TEC"...). And it all comes down to one thing- the track choice. Over here every other crossover sled is delivered with 1.5" or 1.75" tracks, but Yamaha insists to deliver the XTX with the Ripsaw 1.25"...
In my opinion, this criticism is true. Yamaha needs to reconsider the XTX track choice. A true crossover sled needs nothing shorter than 1.5" paddle-style lugs, otherwise it will be outperformed also by short track sleds with proper tracks (a lot of people will find out during the coming winter...).

I think some people are taking this a little too personal. I am in no way saying that the XTX will not perform as a crossover. I'm simply saying that Yamaha can really break the mold with this thing if they want to. And given that it hasn't been done yet, (Doo is soon to) they should jump on the chance to once again set th standard. 4 Stroke Crossover, that would be.

Didn't they reduce the approach angle on the xtx. If I remember right from one of the videos they said it has been reduced.

I stopped buying Snowgoer a long time ago when it finally dawned on me how brand biased they are.... Snowtech is better, but they have a lot of ads.

track/skis
If you ride off trail change the track and skis...problem solved.
Yamaha has always built a sled for the average rider, which is likely to spend their time on trail. The guys who hang on this site are the guys who typically take sledding to the next level. I doubt anyone on this sight has ever left anything stock! Heck, part of the fun of sledding for me is taking something and making it better for what I want it to do. Why would we need this site and what would we do in the summer if it weren't for modding????

just curious, does anyone know FOR SURE what size lug will fit in the XTX? I mean plug and play without a bunch of mods, will a 1.5 go right in? maybe a 1.75? Is there clearance concerns?

I didn't look under the sled to see if those heat exchanger guards are on it like they were on the shorty, but if they are, you can't upsize without removing those. After those are off, I would think 1.75 would fit fine. I have 1.5 on mine without issue and it looks like there is room for more.

AGREED 100% Well said LeeKo
Just the other day, someone came up to me and said they don't understand how I can take apart a brand new sled to replace a track that's never been used. It's what we do.
The XTX is a crossover sled designed for both off and on trail use. If Yamaha were to go over 1 1/4 inch lugs on these sleds, imagine how many trail riders would take their sleds back to the Dealer to change out the sliders (not us TYers though)? Yammies are already hard on sliders, the average Joe would be screaming warranty on the sliders every couple hundred miles.

LeeKo and the last few to post have it right i know i am going to catch some heck from this but i think in more cause's than less someone that is a weekend warrior that wants a new sled that only rides a few times a year and does not care about mods unlike most of us here on this Forum. Would most likely be best of buying something like a Skidoo renegade or a Crossfire or maybe a Dragon, But theres a breed out there that like to take on a challange and likes to do mods and to make a sled there own and take pride in that, and understands that Yamaha's have the best if not one of the best engine out there.
Like with me and my XTX the day i brought it home i started to tare it all down and getting all the mods done, I understand its not the "Perfect Crossover" but with a few mods i think it can be one of the best ones out there, if theres ever a day that there is a perfect sled out there that does not need any mods and does not need to be tuned in anyways i dont think id buy it, where would be the fun in that, just set in a lawn chair and stair at it during the summer cause you cant mod it, and this site would be useless i think to about 85 percent of the people on here, they wouldnt need to come on here and browse, and on that note same thing in my eyes with bikes i have a 09 Harley Davidson in my eyes the "Almost Perfect" motorcycle out there and the day i took it home the mods started... :rules
