My 07 rtx leaks gas when tank filled up. Found fuel on the ground below secondary clutch area after filling it and let it sit for 20 min. I did remove the white plastic neck when filling it and put it back in when done filling the tank to the top. Any common things to check. Bought it used and each time i filled it and let it sit it leaks a bit and very strong fuel smell.

If you fill the tank above the white neck if will leak out of the vent hose. Says in the manual to only fill to the white neck!

X2.

Although it is nice to squeeze that extra bit of fuel into the tank, many times it comes out the overflow once you start trailering or riding. I am sure the white plastic piece was put in the filler neck for a reason, so I wouldn't go tossing it in the trash.

also if vent tube is off it will leak worse

Throw out the white thing its pushing the gas out after you put it back in.

R U Nuts?

Leave the white collar alone and fill only to the bottom edge of the white collar. Problem solved (unless you have a crack in the tank).

Could be lol I run both my apex's with out them

I take them out of my sleds also. You can get quite a bit more gas in. I then re-route my vent lines up the handlebar stem further. That keeps the gas from siphoning out.

I suspect that filling only to the bottom of the white collar provides a sufficient air gap for the safe thermal expansion of the gasoline during extreme temperature fluctuations. I guess that I have never had enough of a need for a few additional ounces of gasoline to mess around with how Yamaha designed the fuel tank.

bingo! And moving the vent hose to a higher location will not handle the expansion but it will puke gas out from a higher point when it expands. If my trip is planed out to the last few ounces I will make other provision's for gas!

This has been discussed before. http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php?t=56941&highlight=gas It was originally brought up because of the small size of the stock Nytro fuel tank. And removing the cup adds more than just a few ounces ,if you only filled to the bottom of the "white cup". I get the purpose of the cup, for expansion, assuming the freshly filled tank will be left in a warm environment. I always fill mine on the way to the ride or during the ride. So the fuel going in would be warmer than the above ground air temp, which would cause it to contract. If you fill the tank slowly, for the last 1/2 gallon, the fuel won't be forced out the vent. Running the vent up the bar stem creates a "trap" so a siphon won't start.
