Lean vs rich question.

Link, sent you a pm. I noticed the richness on the bottom as soon as I richened it 1/4 turn. Mine was at 1-3/4 factory. Will try 1-1/2 today along with some 148 mains. I think I am still a little lean in the mid though. I got thrown off a little with some talk of 140's being too rich, now doing my own thing, I guess mine must be different. Might take it to the hills this weekend to try some WOT but waiting till thurs to check temps, getting old, colder than -20c and the fun factor starts to go downhill fast. -30C wouldn't have stopped me once upon a time, but, been there done that.

I have my bottom set at 1 1/4 and it is too lean, stumbles and acts very cold-blooded when initally started. Going to go up to 1 1/2 turns. I'm also going to shim my needle and see if the mid-range is too lean. I have been thinking it is too rich by looking at my tunnel extension and talking to Climbmax but you guys are seeing lean. I figure if it is too rich then it will get worse and I'll pull the shim.

Ride from 6600' up to 10,000' and this last weekend was probably 27 F. I'm running 140 mains and the plugs looked better than the stock jetting of 148 without the turbo. The local dealer looked at the plugs and figured there might be enough room to go down one more size but I probably won't. I'm mostly concerned with the mid-range because it is difficult to boondock with the engine sputtering.

We thought the sputtering was from being too rich as till we leaned it out and it wouldn't run, went way richer, then it moved to a different spot.

Richened the needles up some more and it gurgles like crazy mid throttle, way too rich, was at 1.3mm raised, really rich. Stock needle again and runs a little lean but a lot more rideable. A lot better gauge readings with 148's. I will get some bigger jets for next week. Will probably run these or the 145's and try at higher altitude. Just can't seem to get everything dialed, runs great for 20 mins then gauge starts getting leaner and leaner. At least it's getting broken in, pulls harder every time I go out.

Yeh,I ended up taking my needle shims out after I richened up the mains, too rich, but I think the pilots are influencing the mid range some what because of the spike in boost pressure at throttle chop.if the pilot circuit is too rich then if there is slightly too much boost for a split second then it over loads the bottom and it carries over into the mid range just because it takes that long to clear out.At least thats my theory,we'll see,I should get my new pilots tomorrow. It's hard to test properly without any snow.

Tried richening my fuel screw 1/4 turn and it was worse so I'm definately too rich across the board, going to 1 turn on the fuel screw, looking for leaner pilot jets and seeing what I can find for the needles, maybe needle jets or changing the needle to a leaner one. I'm getting the same mileage as my 800 Doo buddies.

sly... if your presure signal to the carb is the same as others with same jet, then, all should be in the same ball park... fuel presure, vent leaks, many things could add up to diff in mixture... it your sled starts easy when cold and hot, then your pilots are usually in the ball park.. given your input, I would go richer on the needle... i agree with others, when you are way lean, you will get hick ups and hesitation... if you have the time and interest, check out your gain on the fuel presure valve,, that is the add on presure gain to the static presure at idle...

Still working on jetting, I ran 148's at 5800' -20C this weekend. It bogs bad and has backfiring at WOT. I am still seeing lean, got some 150 & 152 mains to try. Anyone else got a nice running one yet?

I talked to PG and they said to finish cranking up the boost before I start jetting down more. They think this might fix my drivability complaints. This weekend's changes are to include upping the boost to 12 psi from 10 psi and the installation of my 911 primary clutch cover and ER roller secondary. I'll use the silver/pink/silver spring with the stock arms and 4.5 rivets in each hole. The secondary will have a 48 degree helix and Duane's special spring for more belt squeeze.

They certainly seem to run better at higher boost. You wouldn't expect it to affect jetting that much, though.

I'm a little skeptical but it's not like it runs so bad I can't ride it now so I'll take their suggestion. Even with it coughing and sputtering half way up the hill, it still is highmarking everything I've ran into.

Sly,did you lean out the pilot circuit yet? That's exactly what I found with the 140's,then I went to 150's and it worked at the top end,but now I'm battling with the bottom end.It just never ends does it.

Hi guys
My 03 RX1/Bender runs pretty darn good now, except a lower throttle settings. I'm not sure if it's rich or lean. It makes a popping noise at 1/8 to 1/4 throttle, and when I shut it off there's a little belching sound like a slight backfire. Is popping usually too lean?
