Making alot of decisions as I just sold 2 of my sleds within the past week, and only have my 2011 nytro xtx remaining. I was looking at 06-07s but decided I would be better off going for an 08.. now here's what I'm wondering.
There is this sled ( 08 ltx ) that is carrying about the same $5500 price tag as some local 2011 apex se sleds. Mint condition and 3500 miles. Is there something about these that make it a higher cost than a 06-07 , as well as rivaling 2011+ SE sleds in price?
Hers a few of the 08s

The last one made me lose my breakfast, still have a bad taste in my mouth from that one.
I always liked the colors of the 08's

Haha yeah, wrong forum for all that nonsense. Although they do ride nice..The last one made me lose my breakfast, still have a bad taste in my mouth from that one.

That said.. I'm pretty torn between one of the 40th models, vs a 2011 SE. The SE is spotless, and has all the new goodies, and some nice extras/add ons. So I'm leaning that way, but just something about the 08s I really like, there than the color. Did they fix most of the issues with the 08 that the 06-07s had? Anything to be aware of on the 08.?
Both are very tempting, especially if I could snag one for $5k

Hopefully I can give you a perspective on both (I ride with an 2008 Apex GT 40th Anniversary and a 2011 Apex XTX). The shock package on the 40th Anniversary is hands-down far superior than that found on the XTX (and even the FLOAT 2s/Mega shock on this SE). I am not sure how the difference in track length will impact you in this sense. The XTX I ride with has a much larger track relative to the 40th Anniversary (144-inches vs. 121-inches) where the two you are looking at are 136-inches (40th Anniversary) and 128-inches (SE).
I think the biggest thing I have found when riding both is how much more comfortable the new generation Apex is compared to it's predecessors. The seating is a little higher and the seat doesn't feel as squishy. And as far as the engine goes, the newer generation Apex is incredibly smooth and even more powerful (my Viper XTX will outrun the Apex XTX to 50 MPH, but after that I can't keep up. My Viper will outrun the 40th Anniversary). And the power steering really makes a difference in terms of comfort and how sore you are sawing at the bars.

Great post , thank you! Good to hear from people who have both. I will say I'm surprised the viper is faster than the 40th. Both sleds are stock gearing and clutching too? My cousin bought a 16 viper xtx last year and it is dead even side by side with my 11 nytro xtx, but I definitely thought the apex would be quicker, especially top end
The 2011 SE that I linked has some nice hygear suspension upgrades as well, also a ice ripper track, and some other little goodies too 9200 miles but the thing is mint, and looks to be extremely well maintained, as well as him being the original owner.
Tough to make a choice as both are separated by about 100 miles in the opposite direction. But for the exact same price, am I wrong thinking the 2011 se is a better bang for the buck?
I do love the look of the 40th ltx, the longer track and suspension, ( even tho the se has significantly improved suspension with the hygear ) and the lower miles, so it really is a toss up..
I guess the only thing holding me back on the 2011 is the track.. just seems like such a short track for so much power. I'm not a huge fan of studs, and I'm guessing the ice ripper really won't help anything unless on ice.. so what are the options for the SE for more traction? 1.6 cobra, possible with a few studs down the middle?

I've heard excellent comments about adding a deeper lug track to an Apex. Obviously, you'd have to make sure you clear everything in the tunnel and weight still is a factor when riding in fresh snow. In my opinion, the increase in comfort and the reliability of the XTX (seriously, we haven't even changed a belt on this thing in 8,500 miles) would have me focus on that SE. Just my $0.02 as you really can't go wrong with either, there are big pros and some cons to both snowmobiles.

Had a '07 121 and now '12 144... If it was me knowing what I know... EPS is king of the long trip ride... 2011 hands down

Thanks for all the posts everyone. As far as the SE goes, with 9200 miles, and what is posted in the ad, who that be a good price? Or is it more along the lines of a $5000 sled? Just wondering what everyone considers a "good" deal for a clean one owner apex shorty with some nice options

WOW makes me cry as I just picked up my 2012 last year... The release of the Sidewinder sure Re-winded the value of all other Yamaha snow machines... @$5500 last year... This would have been the bargain of the century... This year it's a really good price especially with the ripper and shocks!!!

OK, good. It looked like a good deal, and it was always stored /trailered inside, not a spot of rust or oxidation and looks great. I'll post up a few more pics that were taken , hopefully they show up in better quality .. I've always wanted an apex for just a good all around smooth riding sled that I can have some fun on, riding the lakes as well, the few times I'm actually out there.

Also. If I end up with the 2011 SE, what would be the top recommendation for a clutch kit?

Honestly, the stock clutching from Yamaha for the Apex is hard to beat. We've always had stellar belt life and clutch reliability.
